Gold at the end of the rainbow 🌈

Going stir crazy sitting at home recovering from Covid so decided on a ‘sit up’ in one of my favourite ladders yesterday afternoon - weather app said low risk of rain so off to the farm… parked in the yard & it chucked it down - not a good start but was there now so might as well give it a go, could always pack it in if it chucked it down again.

Parked the Disco, set the sticks & loaded rifle over the shoulder to stalk in to the ladder, all good & sat up by 1500. Then the sky darkened & it was clear there was a ‘shower’ on the way… fortunately it wasn’t too heavy & didn’t last too long. As it blew over it left a beautiful sight.

The gap between the two blocks of woodland at the end of the rainbow is exactly 200 yards from the ladder & it’s not unusual for fallow to cross between the two so I was hoping for a pot of gold. I wasn’t to be disappointed as just after 1600 two does appeared, settle the rifle & one down.

Decided to sit a while longer as sunset was at least half an hour off & the view was too good to miss.

As I sat & watched a Muntjac buck popped out opposite but wouldn’t keep still & soon disappeared back into the wood never to be seen again.

Was just thinking that I’d give it 5 mins then call it quits a solitary fallow doe popped out 50 yards to my left, I got the rifle up & cross on it but she had other plans & took off at a trot towards the wood opposite. No worries, a quick bark will stop her… nope, another bark, nope, third time lucky nope, then a slight hesitation & turn of the head - big mistake, two in the bag now. Back to get the car & let the dogs follow up on the first one as it’s been a while since they’ve been on a deer - they hadn’t forgotten & followed the blood trail up through the wood to a very dead doe. Second one was an easy recovery as it had dropped on the spot in the stubbles.

Two more in the chiller waiting for collection - hopefully be adding to these tomorrow 👍
