Gunsmithing Course

I had some spare time so I enrolled on a Gunsmithing Course run by our friends across the pond. I was a bit sceptical about an online course for something that is so hands-on, but was very pleasantly surprised. Got sent a load of tools, and materials for projects (including an M1 Garand stock to practise dent and scratch removal as well as stripping, staining and oiling). Off the top of my head, 27 exams I think? I really enjoyed it, learned a heck of a lot and have been using these new-learned skills ever since.

Is there any proper gunmakers left in Norn Iron, big bang ? There used to be a few down here, but they have all died off now or closed, could not compete with the imports and mass produced stuff.

Advanced Gunsmithing. In terms of real cost, as well as the price of the course, about 300 hours of my time. What did I get from it? A good working knowledge of the internal workings of firearms, how to silver solder, use the correct tools appropriately, how to repair stocks (and to give them a good finish), and plenty more. I think it was good value, and it certainly boosted my knowledge and confidence - well worth it in my opinion.

Not that I’m aware of - as you say I think mass production has done for them....

There is a tendency to sell courses in the USA.
In my work of vehicle body design they offered two courses in Detroit where after three months of evening course attendance you came out with a certificate to be able to get into the big three car firms as a draughtsman. We saw first hand how bad they were and the products made there showed the flawed training.

i wouldn’t for one minute consider myself a gunsmith after 300 hours. However, the understanding it gave me of the inner workings, and the confidence to tackle things such as stock work, checkering and repairs was, to me, more than worth it.

I am sure it was interesting.
The chancers in Detroit could bluff the local managers with their bit of paper which peed us right off, us thathad 15 years of serious training behind us.
