Gut hook recommendations?

I’d say it’s very much a personal thing to either use a gut hook or a knife .Seen green weeps with either in the hands of competent people .Taking time is sometimes not conducive to good results .A quick ,confident cut with either is more often the best route to a neat gralloch .

Listen up guys, I was born on a farm, I skinned just about every animal there is, but we are talking about a young lady here who is willing to take on & learn a tricky procedure, I believe learning with a gut hook would be easier to work out the dynamics involved. The deer we shoot are the small ones & I do believe CWD & Munties are a bit tricky, once you get to Roe & bigger it gets easier. Its staggering how much salad can be got in a small deer, they are like Vietnamese pot bellied pigs. To put this in perspective, I would rather change a tyre on a tractor than a wheel barrow, & I still nip those inner tubes sometimes. But thanks for the advice, I'm sure she will take to a knife once she gets used to the job. She has a Mora BTW, & is an excellent shot. Thanks & Cheers.
Never mind her ability with a knife; I’ve never doubted the fairer opposite sex’s ability to turn a knife, just get her signed up to The Stalking Directory’s Vinyl Friday thread ASAP and let the posting commence.

& her favourite band would be............ Goat!

Beat me to it. Even with a gut hook you can hit the salad bar. Learn to put your hand into the abdomen and shift the guts off the abdominal wall and cut outwards. Works on suspended as well.

Another technique is to put the deer on it's back, grab the belly skin, lift up to where it is well clear of the guts, puncture into abdominal cavity and run it straight down to the cartilage at the end of the sternum.

Quicker and easier in the dark :thumb:

she is French, & doesn't seem to mind rolling her sleeves up & helping out with the carcasse prep, its almost second nature to French country people, English girls would run screaming out of the yard, & carry on faffing around with their nail jobs & hair straightening duties. Her boyfriend once shot a hare here, but only wounded it, she whipped out her penknife, ran over to it, & cut its throat. Wow, respect!!!
And I bet she can fit a set of snow chains.

I got one of the aforementioned Outdoor Edge gut hooks at the Stalking Show from Monarch’s stand, and christened it today (on a home-kill lamb on the farm, but it still counts!). It worked admirably and is like a razor, as the slash across the end of my thumb will attest to.
