She’s actually very good.
Very obsessive about balls and sticks. Periodically shows some selective deafness. Not entirely to be trusted around sheep quite yet. But generally not obviously any more headstrong or difficult to control than other dogs I've had, and substantially better recall than most.
I would say that as a 9 month old dog, she's as good as I could possibly have hoped for.
Obviously not at the standard I imagine is expected of a pro working dog, but she isn't that - she's a family pet who stalks.
And one thing she is really very good at indeed is sitting quietly whenever I stop when stalking. If I stop to glass, or sit for a bit to watch an area, or lie up in ambush, or (dare I say it) set up for a shot on sticks, she just sits quietly and waits. No whining, no pulling. It's not until I lower the rifle, and give the command 'Track' that she goes bananas. And then, yes, she's close to unstoppable. But of the 8 beasts I've shot with her, not once has she shown any inclination to do anything until I give the command.
Now - I worked very long and hard on this from a very early age. I would not be attempting to take shots with her attached to me if I thought there was any kind of risk. I am not an idiot. I am, however, keeping her on the lead for now because I don't entirely trust her not to wander about and disturb the deer while I'm lining up. Off the lead, she likes to be 5-8 meters in front, snuffling and rootling about. We are working on this, because it is not where I want her to be, and she is improving.
