High impact velocities is whats required for armour penetration. High velocities give much higher energy on the point of the bullet as it hits the steel and there is enough energy to turn harden steel into soft molten steel which is then pushed through the target leaving a hole.

I was shown a steel target where the little 17 hornet had punched straight through.

That is because it is thin, use a 1" piece and fill your boots!

Yep but conversely the WW1 hun discovered that by reversing the mauser bullet the then forward-pointing base was rather a bad result for the crews of the new tanks.
Not the best video but I distinctly remember a show where an modern army ordnance officer was astounded to see this happen real time.

Aye I remember seeing one of these in the Somme’s Albert museum - they had a chainmail “curtain” behind the leather front to catch the flecks of paint and bits of metal that bullets create when they don’t penetrate fully - medieval invention repurposed for WW1 9/10 centuries later!
That and a german sniper armoured faceplate - most horrible thing ever - think Phantom of the Opera mask in steel!

My .204 Ruger causes much more damage than my 6.5cm.
No where like going through but it leaves a decent witness mark on each shot
Speed is definitely at play in terms of damage.

My 204 has done the same, my 204 hammered a small fox target but it had a few close range strikes which you shouldn't do according to Tom's targets.
