Hares

40 in one field must eat a fair amount of expensive grass?

They must do some damage. There is a formula that I cannot remember for the life of me, but it's something like, 3 rabbits eat as much as 1 hare, and 6 hares eat as much as 1 Roe...

Back in the ‘70s, the keeper at Nanoron used to tell us…3 hares eat as much as one sheep.

I don't think farmers realise how much damage hares do. They may see a few but go out at night with a thermal and they are everywhere. Buggers for saplings and alike. I shoot a few each autumn with the .204 as I have a mate who loves hare.
Years ago I got £5 each now no outlet.

A few hare eating a small amount of a crop pales into insignificance with unwelcome visitors. Hare are a joy to see

If you have an issue with this, post your address details and a few dozen will be sent to you.

Years ago farmers used to put sheep on winter wheat, on a thin crop it makes it tiller out more, I dont see Hares as a problem on Rape or cereals, but sugar beet, it certainly is. They nip the top off young beet to get the sugar & moisture, working there way down a row. With modern varieties we still get into C quota, 35 + tonnes an acre, so I'm not too worried. Yes they are here in record numbers, I haven't shot one in years, but as Ratel says, a young 3/4 grown hare in September is simply delicious, I'm tempted but.... its a joy to see them.

I love seeing hares but shoot them when Im asked to. I agree with Nickb that deer are great to see, as is most wildlife, but I still shoot them.

All wildlife is great to see so that's no argument.
Love seeing foxes and rabbits but still shoot them 🦊🐇

Sorry...thath's what I was trying to say...obviously not very well

Most of what I shoot I love seeing...apart from carrions and magpies (not shootable in Wales).

It's a joy to see deer but do you still shoot them ?
I like to see a few Roe on the farm, but take the odd buck, Fallow are increasing exponentially as are reds, reds cause more damage than anything else, & yes I love venison! Muntjac is as good a meat as you could wish for. And I dont find them particularly nice to look at, apart from down a rifle scope, creepy little feckers

Out of interest has the magpie population increased that much since the ban ?

Anecdotal comment...in my view its a Yes...i saw a decent amount before the ban but seeing more each year...I hate the birds...not sure how conserving their number will benefit the wider biodiversity ...I ll leave it there so this doesnt get political :)
