Help with a bipod

Hi Guys,

I have a new setup of a tikka t3x and like a fool I sold my old setup with my Harris bipod. I’m torn between the atlas and the tier one. Any suggestions considering that I have a swivel stud? I’m open to all brands.

Thanks

I have a BT Cal Atlas, if you want to have a play around with it as your in Surrey let me know bud

Harris are light if your stalking, Atlas a bit heavier better suited to target work imho. I have a large heavy Fortmeir for target work.

Thanks for the responses. @DVS1 do I need to have a picatinny put on my rifle or would it work on the sling swivel as on the site it looks like they are all QD

Think you need to look at the weights of the bipods again. Atlas are 311g Harris about 400g

A lot of bipods now days are picatinny rail attachment so a rail would be needed. There are a few methods of attaching a picatinny to the sling stud but I haven’t found one that’s really solid. So having a second hold drilled into the stock is the better option. Then use the sling stud hole for the second point of contact.

Fit a rail

For Hunting Spartan pro tac long is hard to beat with a gunsmith’s adapter. I shoot alot off sticks and the no bipod on normally helps with that

I believe they're all pic rail/arca attached, whether there is an adapter for sling swivel I'm not sure. I know there is a sling swivel to pic rail adapter. I stalk as well as shoot from static positions and don't find the atlas too heavy, I have fitted a Midwest Industries QD rail attachment also so I can gain a few inches further forward mounting and the obvious QD capability

No, I've got adaptors that replace part of the bipod. Unfortunately they seem to have gone up in price.

Area 419 adapter is £49 from Brownells and then any 17s picatinny clamp or an ARCA clamp can be used and an ARCA rail placed on the stock.

Like many though I have shot a handful of deer on a bipod in the last few years. Most being off sticks or my back back/vorn over the heather. Going ground level and being laid in the mud or a puddle is something I have mostly left being.

Consider the length of any bipod you purchase. Short ones are great on a range mat or the bonnet of a car but useless on heather or summer when the grass is up. The short ones look better under the rifle but again this is function over form. Go long legs.

I have just bought a Dolphin Carbon Picatinny attachment bipod. It was half the price of the mainstream brands. It has a really good cant lock that doesn't undo itself like Tier one bipods and doesn't dig into your back like a harris when carried on a shoulder sling. £149 or so at 311g. I have made compromises and will be buying a longer legged bipod when I can decide on the model I want. To get one that is light enough and with all the features you would be looking at £400. Either the Gunwerks or MTNgear from New Zealand. Neither of these is an insignificant purchase and I want to get one in hand first. I had seen this bipod at Dolphin guns when collecting some barrels and bolts that had been fluted and couldn't resist.

I don't like the regular ATLAS because the pan feature is part of the Cant lock. You don't need pan. It does nothing for shooting fundamentals and recoil management.

Harris has a lot of strengths as a stalking bipod. Not my favourite but I want one to shoot on the range as well and Harris is not the best.

Of Atlas and Tier One, the Atlas is more solid/better made IMO but it is a chunky wee thing that is a bit of a pain as far as slips go. Tier One isn't as good as they would like to tell you , it is a bit more rickety TBH but the version I have has a better profile than the Atlas. Good enough.

I like the look of the Gunwerks, it may be the one we have been waiting for.

Thanks all for the advice. I think the first thing to do is get a rail popped on as I tried a swivel adapter and it’s perfect on the CZ but it’s awful on the Tikka. I’ll have a look at my gun shop and see what they have lying around as it’s quite clear that some of these are a substantial purchase and I want to have one in hand before paying out. I agree on going longer as the shorter ones for me have never really worked out and were always sold on eBay shortly afterwards.

Think again. How often do you use the bipod? Having a pica rail on the fore end is not the nicest for when you are not using it.
Magpul make a nice bipod with a direct attachment to the sling stud. No pica, no adaptor.
