Hilux auto box

Any of you folks driving a Hilux 2.8 auto had it in for service and had any software upgrades to the auto box ?
My old 3.0 was a bit of a pest dropping too far down the gears going downhill when you were braking, but the newer one seems pretty extreme, weather usually revving well over 3k before finding an appropriate gear.

I've got a 21 plate 2.8 Hilux Invincible X with an auto box and I also find it extreme going down hill. Engine braking is one thing, but I'm often worried that it will blow the engine when I go down steep hills at speed. Not sure what can be done about it though.

Don't they have a 'manual' option where you can select the gears using paddles or simply putting he selector into a different mode? I thought pretty near all modern autos had this, certainly my Discovery does.

Aye, they do. But you shouldn't have to be using that in normal road driving. It's like it jumps down too many gears in reaction to you applying mild braking downhill.

Are "real drivers" the type that buy Defenders to toodle about "green laning" ?
Lol :-) definitely not.

I do run a manual hilly and whilst it’s not as cozy as an auto, the level of control is something I couldn’t live without. When the auto decides something for you at the wrong time, it’s very annoying.

That said, before we know it we won’t even be able to order manuals anymore.

Always driven autos off-road, with exception of a '76 swb Landy. Never had any issues with control, but then I'd never have it in full auto off-road.
But the issue here is the vehicles on road behaviour.

Charles Butler in Forfar used to be the "go to" people for auto boxes. If they still exist, might be worth asking them.

The new hi lux has the same auto box as Isuzu. My mate traded his new auto Isuzu in for a manual as it wasn’t changing down properly. No good when your towing 3 ton +

Things still very new, with the caveats on maintaining the 10yr warranty, so I'm hoping Toyota have an update.

Aye, they're primitive by comparison with the Ranger 10spd auto box, but then they're reputedly not very hardy.
