I had a quote for the removal of a hornet nest and 2 wasp nests from my roof last week.£100 per nest 😩.
so I decided to do it myself, how hard can it be.
wasp and hornet nest powder came today, how to apply it without getting stung to fcuk.
brainstorm! I'll make something 🤯.
2 aluminium brush stales,2 curtain poles and a bit of plastic pipe later here it is.
just fill up the tube and attach the air line and away we go.
the bit of pipe lagging on the end seals against the entrance and blast it in.
all windows in the house shut, dog's inside.
they didn't like it one bit, loads going darlec outside.
seems to have worked,a quick hoover up on the patio, bobs your uncle 😆👍.
we'll see what tomorrow brings.IMG_20250814_192734.webpIMG_20250814_195855.webp

100 per nest is taking the biscuit.
I charge 75 plus 15 each extra.
You did it very similar to how i would, dont try and fill the entrance incase it fails.
Hooe yours works. Its been a very good year for wasps and hornets

I just leave the nests be, never had a problem with hornets when they've nested about the garden and even the garage. The queens often come into the house but are easily ushered back out.
they are under the barge boards near the bedroom window and are coming inside.

all quiet on the western front this morning, not a hornet in sight 😆.
now onto the wasps,it says on the tin" causes minimal agitation" but I wouldn't like to see them when they were really agitated 😆.IMG_20250815_081425.webpIMG_20250815_081840.webp

Guy at my work got quoted £70 for the removal of a small wasps nest on a pergola at his house. He knows that I kept bees and asked me what would be best option to deal with it. I went out and nipped it off at the Base into a bin bag that I had put a small amount of petrol into. The fumes had them killed in seconds.
This guy had done me a few favours in work over the years so I didn't ask him for anything. I was more than happy to do it as a return for his help over the years.
When he asked what I wanted for my time I said nothing at all I was just happy to help him. Next thing he appeared out of the house with a big tomahawk steak saying he knew I would be awkward and not take payment so he had got me this as a thank you.

Work party at our gun club week last, We were all there' 3 in total. brambles over 6ft high to the side of the 25yd indoor range required clearing. A small JCB owned and driven by our new member soon had a massive area pushed away from the building where the wasps nesting in the brick work was now visible. Later on after a minor lunch break most of what was required to be cleared was done, an uneven piece of ground had to be levelled, so in steps I to see how we were going near the end of the wall and brambles, initially I thought a BRIAR had caught my head, No' an irate WASP or WASPS were on me, the pain was considerable I was flapping madly as I was being stung 3 times on the head and on my right hand trying to get it off me, then another 4 on my neck inside my collar. Still uncomfortable even now, heaven knows what a hornet attack would like.

I'm glad I used my homemade remote powder tool,so didn't have to go to close, but still made a hasty retreat 😆

I was out pigeon shooting few weeks back. Set up the hide then got the deeks out the big plastic box I keep them in and tossed it in behind the netting and went about setting out the pattern. When I returned the box was covered in wasps! They didn't seem to be to agitated so i realised that spot for a hide wasnt going to do. I gently removed the box from inside the hide and all the wasps left the box and went back into the underground nest that I had blocked the entrance to. I watched the last one go back into a small hole in the ground and I swiftly shifted the hide. Just goes to show they'll nest anywhere so mind yourselfs out there

Update to previous report, went to the rifle club after clay shooting today and looked at the work that had been achieved to the side of the 25yd range wall area. F*+KC! ANOTHER WASPS NEST!! Just about where I had my experience, they are in the wall, high up is an air brick and the little brutes were zooming in and out.
All this was noted from a reasonable distance I might add.

sounds like you need to make something like I made to get to the entrance at a safe distance 😆

I ended up with 16-20 stings after a sheep stood on a wasp byke I was unwittingly stone near. Bloody things chased me all over the garden. I don't mind admitting it was a pretty frightening experience, and the histamine reaction was horrible. I keep an EpiPen handy now, just in case. I've hated the damn things ever since

I had some bees take up residence in my soffit or behind the window frame or both. Spray wasn’t working well as there were too many, I used 6 cans of spray when they’d come to the nest of 3 or more. so I grabbed some powder, pex tubing a 90 elbow and my air compressor. Really made them mad and killed quite a few. I just applied some again right before the cold spell so hopefully they took that powder into the hive with them and they’re all dead.

With the modern wasp-killing powders, sprays, etc. I've never had a problem getting rid of wasp nests. You really need to select the right time when you do the deed and use a bit of common sense and caution.
As far as hornets are concerned, unless they are causing a real problem, I leave them alone. They are rarely aggressive. I had a colony of them in the cavity of the garden shed for several years they never caused any problems.
