How do YOU tip?

If its deserved then I will tip and if its expected and not deserved...well then its either a no or a small amount.

We were in Cambodia a few years ago and there was a group of school kids and they were looking for donations. Very polite and I offered them 5 USD...the lad said the min was 20 USD so I walked off ...oh I ll take the 5 USD...sorry but that ship has sailed

Yep...I dont exactly imagine the school (if they were in fact doing it for the school) would have see any of the money.

In fact some places they ad extra if you take more that 6 covers. If anything they should give you a discount for bringing so much custom.

Place the note on your open palm. Sneeze messily onto it. Then apprach keeper. The mucus will ensure the tip sticks to the keeper's hand. As a subsidiary benefit, it is guaranteed that he won't ever expect or accept a tip from you in future.

I don’t know a keeper that would worry about a bit of snot on the day or any other day, in fact if you did it the first time worry about what’s coming your way should you return.

I should've clarified in my OP that I was referring to shoot tips, but it's been interesting getting people's different perspectives

Personally, I only tip for good service. I have a friend who regularly drops a £20 tip on the table if we're out for a meal, even if the service has been merely adequate, as opposed to deserving it.

On a days game shooting I never tip below £50 good or bad (I’ve been a keeper, I know how much effort goes into the day!)

On a really good day I have tipped as much as £100 all and always cash.

As for stalking £50 a day as a minimum

At the end of 2 or 3 days stalking when the keeper would be gralloching the last sessions deer I would wait until I could speak to the keeper alone and slip him a tip.
I know not everyone tipped the keeper, some thinking they’d bought the estate going off the stalking prices.

I'd rather give the fifty quid to a beggar on the street, quite honestly. And I'd do it gladly.
If I'm paying for a day out then I don’t expect the person who's being paid to run that day to be holding his hand out for donations at the end of it. I'll pay my bill, and that's that. If the 'keeper feels he's not getting paid enough he needs to have a word with his boss, not go scrounging off clients.
The whole tipping business is demeaning to everyone involved: The client, the 'keeper and the shoot owner. It ought to be consigned to the history books.

I find the practice of tipping awkward, patronising & offensive & thankfully I don’t have to encounter it when shooting but if someone was kind enough to invite me I would expect to reciprocate with a shooting invitation.
I eat out a lot as I travel & work on location & feel forced to tip then & generally do. Having lived in countries where it’s not normal practice I expect the staff to be paid properly & thoroughly resent feeling forced to top up someone’s wages. I was 10%-ed recently for a single cup of coffee which triggered quite the response from me.
Like VSS above I would cheerfully (& regularly do) buy lunch for a homeless person when I am getting my own lunch.

Loading for him one day earlier this season,he came to me at the end of the day a bit flustered and said "do you have any cash on you?"
He'd forgotten to carry any to tip the keeper, presumably his business orientated world is cash free.

The bloke who puts barrels on my rifles charges an amount that is worthy of his level of skill . As does the mechanic on my car.


Why the hell we tip someone doing a job is beyond me.

If I get something more than I paid for, Such as the last time I went stalking, I had 4 cull animals when expecting 2 in 2 outings and effort was clearly applied to continue to get me onto something else. But a 100 bird day is a 100 bird day I’ve paid for.


As for a keeper not holding his hand out. No, I’ve been on a shoot where the caption was told the keeper expects £xx per gun.


I’ll also never give a a beggar a penny. I know what the state provides having been well involved in supporting homeless and those in need.

I was it in America last year on an invite from an associate who owns a large range and firearm store. He took for a nice meal and refused to tip. I was shocked, it was then that he gave me insight to charging a fair price for any service and it’s down to the business to support their staff. He won’t allow tipping and this is in the states.

If anyone needs to survive on tips in this day and age something is very wrong. My partner works for minimum wage in a farm shop and doesn’t see tips. She provides a service akin to the cafe attached, if not more involved by offering advice on how to prepare certain items and taking things to the car. Yet they get a tip for taking a coffee to a table. It just makes no sense. You don’t tip supermarket staff, well I certainly don’t.

Tipping is outdated. Pre minimum wage.

It’s almost a shame tax. Being embarrassed you are paying so much for having fun or enjoying yourself.

I do okay myself, always get a repeat invite. Glad you said stalking and shooting is expensive. The folk that ask for help without offering anything up does get a bit much, that’s easily another topic.

Tipping is an evocative subject as always. Charge the relevant rate you believe superfluous to the price you put on your bill and just be honest.

Need to pay over the odds because you’re a paper hat to ensure they have you back…
