How many went camping or on Nature rambles as youngsters?

I was lucky enough to grow up on a farm, and have access to the neighbours land too. Every avaible minute was taken up by making dens in the woods, rope swings, “traps” for animals that never worked. Later came ferreting, then lurchers, then an air gun and finally shotguns.

I still like to get out now, as I type I’m in Carrog, Wales having just walked 18 miles of the Llangollen round. It’s a wonderful walk, but the distance with an overnight backpack has taken its toll on my knees today!

I was one of two boys and my brother wasn’t really interested in the outside like myself. Me and Dad would walk out of the house most Sat mornings and crawl back in Sunday evening. Bivvy up in a field and fish(Woolworths rod and reel) to hopefully catch our dinner. Dad would set snares for rabbits too. It got me hooked and I’ve been the same ever since. I think it really helped my progress in the Army as I watch lads that had come from towns and city’s struggle at the start. They mostly come right in the end but it really helped myself. I still fish hunt and wild camp now and my brother still doesn’t 45 years on lol

I grew up wondering the fields round about the house.
All spring collecting birds eggs to eat or for collection, summer spent fishing and winter hunting in one form or another.
First ferret aged five, first lurcher aged 9 first shotgun aged 14.
I walked and camped the Pennine way aged 14 sending dirty clothes home to mother by post, at the same time collecting clean clothes from the post office! I had one or two other firsts aged 14 as well.
Apart from school I loved my childhood, hated school.

Yes.

Owned a blowpipe and footlong parang before the age of 18, much fun was had at the expense of local wildlife.

Joys of growing up in a former colony.
