Howa 1500 or Remington 700

Time has come to change my shot out .22-250 currently have a savage axis and am wanting an upgrade so am stuck between the Remington 700 or the howa 1500 thinking varmint barrel on either rifle what are people's preferences or can some one suggest a better rifle not fussed on 2nd hand.

I would personally look at something like the Remington 700 Police (only comes in .223, .308 and .300WM though, this may be a deal breaker).
The reason I suggest this, is because it has an exceptional trigger (the 40X) and stock (HS Precision) out of the box. It is probably one of the better put together 700s and is reliably accurate. You can always get the 26" shortened if you like, but I've found it really doesn't get in the way.

Definitely a deal breaker it's my foxing rifle and I just enjoy .22-250 as a round I wouldn't change to anything else.

Fair enough, 2nd option in Remington 700 flavour in .22-250 would be the VSSF (Varmint Stainless Synthetic Fluted), also HS Precision stock, heavy barrel that's stainless and fluted. Cracking rifles, highly accurate and a million different rails and accessories available.

Or

Remington - make sure there is no notch on the bolt handle where the primary extraction cam is (angled piece at root of handle)

Walk away if there is

Walk away if the cam does not engage with mating surface on the action

Howa check function of trigger - early ones def not as hood as the two stage newer type

Both good rifles though need casting watchful eye over before committing

Borescope required for used in 22-250 it’s not kind on barrels

Part of my thinking was both are fairly customisable and I am sure for a while brock and Norris used the howa actions to build a lot of there rifles

If you like the Remington style is it worth a look at bergara? the hunter is a similar price to the Remington and it’s the same footprint and it’s just a smoother and nicer action over all.

They are very good in terms of buikd and function

Robust

M16 extractor , integral recoil lug

Not as smooth to cycle or shoot as a Sako or tikka

But neither is the Remington

Both can be fitted with aftermarket parts

The howa is not as versatile in this respect as the Remington

I have a Howa 1500 mountain rifle in 7mm-08 and can’t fault it, I’d buy another one happily! Can’t say I’d say the same for all of the 700’s I’ve owned.

Tikka is a great option as well, just as customisable as the others in any way that matters…probably be my recommendation

My 700 is a joy to shoot long range and normal distances. 30.06 with the correct selection of bullet does the job well.My Tikka's are all part of that comfortable feeling, 6.5 & 223.

BC.

I have a semi custom 700 and a varmit barrel on my Howa. Both more accurate than me. Howa is a lump with a GRS stock so if your doing lots of walking would advise against a varmit barrel. It's great for range work. Wouldn't part with either. 700 has a rifle basixs trigger. Howa trigger has been tuned.

I didn’t think there was much to choose between the Howa and the 700
Weatherby Vanguard is much the same rifle as well.
