Howdy folks

Hi,
My names Dan, I’m a young and enthusiastic outdoors man, with passion for guns! Looking at getting my FAC this year but would like to do my dsc1 and some deer stalking ASAP! I’m new to this whole side of shooting but I am trying to learn as quickly as I can. If you’ve got any advice for moving from air guns to FAC or about deer stalking I would love to hear it!
Thanks,
Dan

Welcome from Essex, look in the deer stalking opportunities section to see if you can get out on a stalk and use an estate rifle while your waiting
I will do, thank you! Are there any you’d recommend? Or any tips you have on what to read up on or practice beforehand?

ive not been over your way in all honesty so others may be best placed to recommend someone. Worth taking a look at shot placements and identification before you get out with someone, but if with a guide they should go through it with you beforehand, also worth having a think if your going to keep the carcass and if you are take a look at some butchering on youtube if you'll do it yourself (scott rea project is good) also block out a good portion of the day for when you do it

That’s great info thank you! I am interested in keeping the carcass and learning how to butcher so I will definitely go watch some videos! Realistically how much meat would you get off say your average roe deer? Gotta now how much freezer space would I need to clear haha!

I've not had a roe, but had muntjac, cwd and fallow but imagine a small chest freezer is more than enough space for a roe. If space does become an issue you can always bone the bigger joints out or cut them up further

Welcome from London.

I echo T.eddie's sensible advice.

Get a couple of paid stalks in locally to you, using the estate rifle. Keep the receipts as proof you've been stalking. If you decide you like it, apply for an FAC in appropriate deer calibres. Think about booking a DSC1 course. It's not mandatory but it will teach you a lot about the 6 UK deer species. Maybe join BASC or BDS (other membership organisations are available).

Look for your own permission or a syndicate to join.

DSC1 is a good place to start for a novice. Lots of outfitters that will take you out on an estate rifle in the opportunities section.

The best advice I would give is consider your backstop and remember that there’s always tomorrow so don’t be pressured into a shot you’re not entirely happy with. Bullets go a lot further than air gun pellets.

Thanks for the replies guys! I have looked into doing my DSC1 and it’s definitely something I want to do. It’s going to be a long time before I can get my own rifle so estate stalking opportunities are going to be my only option for the time being which I don’t mind because I’m hoping I can learn a lot from the guides.
Good shout about the receipts though I didn’t think of that!!
Thanks again guys!

Okay that’s good to know. I might look into getting a chest freezer as I think that’ll be the better option.
