Which is why I use a folding .410, cost me a whole £20Huge ricochet risk too if you have a stony backstop

Or load a .410 caliber pistol slug (copper or lead) in it.Lets hope you can still get lead cartridges for it!
That would depend on the bullet surely?Huge ricochet risk too if you have a stony backstop
Or load your own frangible slug rounds like the ones they issue for trapped badgers.Lets hope you can still get lead cartridges for it!
Of course, but a slow .38 calibre bit of hollow point lead doing 800fps is less likely to exit and be a danger than a solid copper going 3000+ from a .243That would depend on the bullet surely?
A high velocity, light frangible round is more likely to fragment than ricochet compared to a heavy slow pistol round, surely?
Why on earth would you use solid copper for despatch!Of course, but a slow .38 calibre bit of hollow point lead doing 800fps is less likely to exit and be a danger than a solid copper going 3000+ from a .243
Because not everyone carries around a random box of spare ammo for despatch, hence being able to justify a second firearm for the purpose! Why on earth would you use solid copper for despatch!
I would suggest a 58 gr v-max doing 3800 fps plus is less likely to exit than a subsonic 158 gr .358 bullet.
Most people carry spare ammunition, carrying 2 rounds of highly frangible ammunition is not a biggy.Because not everyone carries around a random box of spare ammo for despatch, hence being able to justify a second firearm for the purpose!

The question was asked ‘why not just use your deer rifle’ you responded it was the ricochet risk but I think that’s a non starter in reality.
A lot of people with Hd pistols just want to own a pistol!
The OP mentions the size of the pistol as being of concern so I held it as a way of size comparison .With respect,, I loath seeing a finger on the trigger of a handgun when not shooting.
See it in films all the time. Makes me wince.
Why is it a shame? However this is going way off track from the original post but no surprise in ends up as individual choices and generalised comments about the rationale for the good reason for a HD pistol ... which is such a shame.
How about starting a new thread and not derailing this one? If I reply to you then no doubt someone will helpfully point out the irony ....Why is it a shame?
Some people have genuine reason and a need, others like the chap on here a while back who wanted a semi auto pistol for despatching deer he’d not quite managed to kill with his deer rifle, just want a pistol……
People who have pistols are often very keen to show them off at every opportunity!

This is true. Most people who stalk don't need to stalk, they just want to![]()
But the OP has been answered already about what happens to the pistol and why.How about starting a new thread and not derailing this one? If I reply to you then no doubt someone will helpfully point out the irony ....
I know, still makes me winceThe OP mentions the size of the pistol as being of concern so I held it as a way of size comparison .
It has the safety on, is not loaded and is a single action pistol, the action is not cocked so it cannot be fired by pulling the trigger.
ETA: Crap. After looking at this photo, I just found a pistol I misplaced. I wondered where it went off to... <face palm>
