Hunting knife

Everyone should own a Mora and be able to sharpen it. I've had other knives but always gone back to a Mora.

For the field and getting a deer into the larder a knife has to do two extreme things - a point to start the gralloch, but also be pretty tough to remove heads and legs etc. and touching bone. For me an acute scandi grind like a mora is ideal for that. For roe and smaller, a 3 or 4 inch blade is all you need and it can fit in your pocket. Having a hi viz colour is helpful - I lost a few knives and sheaths late at night.

I'm a fan of @Peter Eaton knives, full flat grind with a micro bevel edge, Easy to clean and strop.

I will have several blades being advertised here either later today or over the weekend, likely over the weekend as working on a big knife project with a steel company at the moment.

All the knives will be of the highest standard using Elmax, a Swedish 3rd generation powder steel which can be ground far thinner than basic steels, which in turn means sharper edges.

I will endeavour to add a knife of two this evening if time allows.
 
I can't see past those orange handle Portlands made by that Mitchell chap.
Unfortunately way out my price league.
So ill have to make do with my Swibo 😊

I know that the blade is fairly thick (great for splitting a sternum) but I still love my Fällkniven F1 that I built up from a blade blank. The curved sweep of the blade is great for skinning and cutting around joints.

I’ve got quite a few custom and factory blades, however just picked this up and used it today to gralloch a Roe, splitting the sternum. Must say im quite impressed

 
Whats the best one in your opinion/ your favourite
Something, easy to sharpen or replace, so easy to lose a knife when out stalking, that paying a premium price seems unwise. Currently, I use an Opinel No. 8, for make the initial incisions, to open up a hole at the tendons on the rear legs and to do the anus and the esophagus. Thereafter, I use a (bright yellow) plastic handled craft (stanley) knife with a hooked blade, it is incredibly effective and efficient at unzipping the pelt and opening up the stomach for the gralloch without piercing the paunch and also the legs and chest for skinning, no effort required. Another characteristic which I find valuable in the craft knife, is that the blade disappears into the handle and I can safely carry it in a pocket, so no need for a sheath. I previously used a "tripe knife" which was also brilliant, but sadly I contrived to lose it while stomach crawling for a shot and couldn't locate it after.
 
I sadly admit to being afflicted with that common stalkers malaise of ‘AKHD’…… Acute Knife Hoarding Disorder! These vary from a couple of beautiful (but expensive) hand made blades, an EKA, Buck, Hella etc right through to my first ever Swiss Army knife🫣

Despite all of this though, I’m with @VSS, & always end up leaving the house with my Buck 110 on my belt (& I know lock knives aren’t best practice but there you go…). I like them so much I even bought a second/cheaper nylon handled one as I didn’t want to lose my original wood/brass one!! Similarly, I do pretty much all of my skinning out etc with the much maligned Mora Clipper.

Neither have ever let me down & just do exactly what I need. You’ll just know when you find the right one for you👍
