'I just like killing things'

Rather worrying outlook on life. I can appreciate the enjoyment of the sport. But just to like killing, creepy. I frequently leave rabbits, foxes and so on if I don't need to take them. Its population control, not extinction.

***By "I frequently leave rabbits and foxes if I don't need to take them" I mean I frequently do not shoot (take) rabbits or foxes if there is no need to. I remove and use all my kills, if I can eat it the dog does.

I've found this sentiment to be not that uncommon, in my mixings with various different shooting circles. Even if not saying those exact words, how they act is telling enough. People shooting things which do not have a reason to be shot and leaving them lie where they were. I made a short acquaintance with a fella a few years ago, was invited out on his ground with him. He drove around, 22-250 out the window, mincing hares, rabbits, pigeons on the ground throughout this grass pasture. It was not pest control but joy in killing

I can't bring myself to waste much, especially if I've taken a life, all the rabbits I shoot get processed, even if some goes to the dogs, we always keep the loins, the guts and other waste goes to feed the foxes, but now the local Chinese restaurant won't take those I'm a bit stuck with what to do with 'em, answers on a postcard please .
Good on ya for leaving things alone when you have no need to take the life!

Yes VonBlitz, I understood that, I just didn't get my reply quite right, edited it to amend things.. It's nice to know some of us still appreciate what's around us, some think it's a virtual game, the number of guns on driven shoots now that looked shocked when you offer them the brace at the end of the day is incredible!

All good mate! Just alarmed myself with my own response hahaha!

As far as what I do with my kills.

Rabbits, pigeons, squirrels - Human consumption, pies, stews, roast. Or dog food.

Corvids - fox bait, badger food.

Foxes - I will dig a hole/burn.

Just shows a lack of respect, wether it be game or ‘vermin’ it still deserves some respect. It’s like a certain FB group that uses the catch phrase “If it’s red it’s dead”…I hate it! And “if it flies it dies” is another one I hate! No need!

People like that are a menace and shouldn't hold a ticket. If they've no respect for the quarry they'll have no respect for close seasons, protected species, calibre conditioning, boundaries, safety, or anything else.

Anyone who can't sit quiet and enjoy just watching a wild creature that isn't a target species without wanting to kill it, isn't a shooter, they're just a cruel vandal.

Those were the exact words a recent new acquaintance used when I asked if he wanted a few of the rabbits we'd shot from a new permission I've obtained. Needless to say, our 'friendship' has been curtailed. Unbelievable

I stoped beating on a game shoot because that was the attitude of virtually all of the guns, no interested in taking a brace away with them, no shot selection, “if it flys it dies”, so I guess your new acquaintance is no different to others who kill for fun/sport, just more outspoken about it.

That's exactly why I no longer want to be part of any game syndicates. The attitude of some folk is truly sickening

Not really any different to many, many, MANY guns on big bag pheasant days...

Odd how we get upset about someone saying this when it's a rabbit or a deer, but seem totally comfortable when it's a pheasant or a fox. Totally subjective really. Anyone on here who denies that they enjoy killing things is doing some quite complicated mental gymnastics.

I see your point, but it's not really the same thing, is it? To most of us, I'd very much hope that the actual killing is done dispassionately and as humanely as possible. I agree that the whole point of the exercise is to kill, but that's only part of an entire holistic process that then continues on. Killing purely for the sake the enjoyment of killing is entirely different, and will never be something that I can reconcile myself to accept, whether it's deer, rabbit, fox, or pheasants

As others have said seen this attitude on a lot of game shoots, I've not done big days but you still see it on small days and actively flaunting this attitude is a surefire way to sway those who are undecided on the viability of shooting / hunting to the "anti" camp
