Just thought I would give you chaps the heads up on these before you buy Ford Citroen Peugeot 1.4 HDI 16 valve manufactured after 2017 we have now come across three of these with timing chain problems ,the chain breaks around 32,000 miles causing catastrophic damage to the engine .It has become clear that it is a design problem as the cam carrier and cam chain has now been supper ceded three times , IMG_3968.webp

Peugeot are pooh and then some my low mileage 406 threw a piston rod on Thurrock services roundabout many moons ago.
Daughters 206 ,same schitt engine cam chain as above.
Ex wife's Renault Megane also list its cam chain.
Peugeot/Citroën and Renault badly made out of cheese and fag ends.
Buyer beware.

30k out of a chain? :O Christ...

Though tbf, I just picked the qashqai back up from its MOT/service, and there was another french car on the ramp. Mechanic was telling me it was in for a new chain, not because the chain was knackered, but because they have a plastic guide for the chain, which obviously wears out like nobody's business and gets replaced in a oner...

Guy at work has had no end of problems with his qashqai, just a heap of scrap.

Had mine now for about 16k (2017 reg now at about 62k on the clock) not had much wrong with it except the AC.

Apparently specifically the '17 production used collinders for the condensers. Can't be arsed getting it fixed, as I need to find a different garage - my usual guy doesn't have the new gas setups, so won't touch the thing.

Yes, it would be great if you could relate some of your experience into what's good and what's not so good.

Peugeot offer a 1.2 engine that has a wet cam belt i believe, as does the Ford. Both have serious issues.

My Mrs is after a new car and i am at a loss as to what to suggest. All new cars just seem pretty crap, with 3 cylinder, turbo engines and direct injection. Well, the ones we can afford anyway. :)

The Mk8 Fiestas do, I can't see it being a good idea.

I'll keep my Mk7.

We have not found any problems with the Peugeot wet belt as long as it is replaced at the right time if you leave it too long the belt starts to break up the particles then go up the oil pick up and blocks the strainer resulting in lost oil pressure good bye engine , Another one to watch for is the VW polo 1.4 diesel three cylinder years between 2014 to 2016 this vehicle had a dual mass fly wheel that failed a very low milage VW scrapped the flywheel and went back to a single mass so no dual mass availability they have a conversion kit available and the vehicle needs a software update cost around £1500

Whenever I'm after a new car I ask my mate at the village garage. I'll list off a few I'm interested in an he'll tell me what to avoid. He's a fan of the kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson, bit old school engines, low power but not trying to wring too much grunt out of a tiny engine.

2019 diesel Dacia Duster - made in Romania but Renault engined - 55 mpg round town and 60-65 mpg on a run. No problems except now due new brake pads on front wheels - has done only 30,000 miles though as Covid intervened. Good ground clearance for ruts and rough ground. - very good value for the money. Don't buy the old Dusters made in India as they are known for rusting (nickname "Dacia Ruster")

Anecdotal, but then all these comments are but I spoke to an RAC guy a few years ago and asked him what he doesn't go to on the side of the road and he said, Suzukis. He said he can't remember ever attending one as a broken down all the time he'd done roadside repairs.

The Indian ones were running around in India with a Renault badge when I was there in 2019.
