INFO-ALL KNIFE MAKERS!!!!

All this talk of knife-making has stirred the creative juices afresh. But I won't hijack this thread:

I ran into this problem with Emberleaf earlier in the year as some may remember.

Since then I've been doing a bit more reading on Registered Designs and I think they are on very weak ground. For a simple £48 you can submit a form to ask for the registered Design to be made invalid or canceled on the basis that it "was not new or lacked material differences". You have to ask yourself if you could register the design of a mug...or a cup....you're unlikely to be able to say it's a 'new' design. Now if you were to print a logo on said mug/cup then the logo my be new...but the shape of a mug/cup isn't materially different to any other mug. I feel the same regarding this knife design.

In addition, they mentioned that all the new shapes are registered...they only appear to have the one (the v2 or the stalker...you pick).

When I had my run-in with them, they came across as very nice guys and I can't help feeling that solicitors are trying to justify themselves here rather than the guy I spoke with. I hope Jeff is successful defending himself but it seems a shame he is being forced to do so. He seems to be a very nice chap and has kindly shared his knife design and given me permission to 'continue' making knives of that design. Just the way it should be.

One of my favourite shapes. Feels great in the hand. You crack on mate. At this point I don’t think it’s possible to have an original design. Make sure the radius where you’re index finger fits is big enough for your thumb to fit when it’s the other way up👍

Good point, fully incorporated:

I’ve watched this thread with a lot of interest and also wanted to speak to the guys at emberleaf about it too as there is often two sides to every story.
im a big believer in speaking as you find and I’ve always found the guys there generous, knowledgeable and keen to help out other knife makers. They’ve tidied up a few of my crappy creations and re ground some other knives never charging an unfair price and always being generous with time and tea.
I like them and whilst I have no idea what’s going on with this I hope both the makers can sort it out between them.

The reply from Emberleaf was that the knife had “failed” but was put right again with a new edge and sheath. How can a knife fail but be sorted with a new edge???

Old Post drag up, but has anyone heard from Jeff of late. A good friend is waiting on a knife for a very very long time and has herd nothing from him.

Just checking all is still well

Nope he went very quiet with a lot of peoples money paid up front! He has about a years worth on his waiting list all paid in full up front. Last I saw he was more keen on making music than knives judging by his social media…. For what it’s worth, the one I got from him was pretty rubbish to be honest too. Shame, like to support an underdog but he seems to be a bit of a chancer….

Oh bugger, that doesn't sound to promising.

I had ordered a knife from him and never got a warm fuzzy feeling that I’d get it.

@snake_2586 is absolutely brilliant, on the other hand. Very communicative and sent me updates throughout the projects he did for me. Brilliantly sharp knives and a very reasonable price as well!

Did the knife arrive @Dr. Strangelove as I asked Jeff on the 4/11 as my earliest date I was told was around then so just politely asked if he had an idea as to when
He said he was running behind I said ok and left it at that
Now I scroll my messages tonight and I see that account is no longer active of Facebook which seems to be his selling account

I saw that a lot of people who had paid up front were very upset that he was selling knives every night on Facebook yet hadn't fulfilled their orders. Facebook page seems to have since disappeared.

I cancelled the order. I sent the below on 01 May:

“…if you don’t mind me asking, when can I roughly expect to receive the knife?”

I never got a reply and on 01 Aug I asked for a refund. Eventually got my money back on 04 Sept.

He has done a vanishing act…. His website makes for interesting reading! But it does show a map with an address to go knocking!
