Introduction to Lamping

Morning folks. I was introduced to this forum yesterday by a stalking friend so I thought I would join the party. I have shotguns and game shoot and have recently gone lamping I am keen to do more. I have a firearms licence and a .22 but was now thinking about .223. Could anyone throw some light on the best SH makes and models and sights please

More to the point are there any I should sheer clear of. Was looking at the the main players Tikka, Howa, Remington. I presume you can’t go wrong with them.

There's nothing wrong with 223 but you may find a 204 suits your needs better, especially shooting at night. For me, as it's a flatter trajectory I have to think a little less about range and holdover and therefore I'm a bit quicker to the shot. 40gr 204 does the job on foxes, some would say, does it better.

204 is well worth considering.

If “lamping” is to be the primary use consider an Arkens Zulus 3-12X - the onboard IR is first class and it is very good value for the money.

If your looking for a budget friendly setup then a tikka or howa rifle in 223 would be a great start. You don't need an nv scope a decent lamp and a scope will do you fine. A fixed power scope, of good quality would make it straight forward so you can get familiar with the sight picture, especially at night. A scope mounted lamp works great. A cheap t68 lamp or better still a sniper hog. Ideally a thermal monocular but a cheap Yukon nv monocular for spotting. 400 for rifle, 300 for scope and 300 for lamp and nv monocular. You could get buy spending less, and you could spend waaaayyyy more too. But this would see you right.
