IR glare - Hik Alpex 4k. Help!

Hi folks, fitted an alpex 4k to the rifle but when I pop on the ir (mounted above the scope), it’s throwing up a massive glare from the moderator. Do I 1: take the mod off and go old school - bang, 2: use a higher mount/sideways mount for the torch or 3: start playing about with black tape? Will try to get some pictures to show what I mean. Essentially a massive blur at the bottom of my crosshair.

Hi,
My shooting buddy had exactly the same issue with his Alpex. He has his IR torch mounted above the scope. He tried all sorts ways to resolve it (moderator covers etc) none which worked. He noticed that reducing the size of the aperture reduced the glare but didn’t remove it. He then covered the bottom of the objective with his finger and the glare disappeared.

He had the scope mounted very low on the rifle, literally just a few millimetres of clearance at the objective. He concluded it wasn’t so much glare from the mod, more the mod was just in the way. He mounted the scope on higher rings and the problem went away.

Now I know that in day light mods don’t show up in low mounted scopes, but this worked for him. Worth a try some cheap rings to see if it works for you before investing in a decent set.

Hope you get it sorted and start enjoying your purchase. The foxes round here certainly aren’t enjoying his Alpex!

Where abouts is the torch sitting in relation to the end of the objective lens, is it level? this could be your problem.
If thats the case move it further back so the lens of the torch sits behind the LRF box, the reason for this is any light spill from the torch hits the back of the LRF box first not the moderator thus creating a shadow,
The other thing to do is tighten the beam right up and look through the scope at a wall about 10 yards away and set it so the bottom of the beam is just touching the centre of your cross hairs, this will give you maximum reach with the torch and reduce whiting out of the foreground.

Over the years I have found the best cure is to get the unit (early days) scope mounted lamps then the smaller type NM800 up higher than the brackets on offer. I proved it was a friend held my scope lamp and lifted it up then the mod glare went away so extended the bracket up and it was (pardon the pun) spot on!
You can move them back but a lot of Ir's have the main body diameter (20mm) than the one which fits in the brackets (about 25mm) you buy, leaving not much room to move them.
My fixes come from my work but get many people have to find a different way, but they work!
SRX using a raised mount on my Hik :tiphat:

I had this on my cz452 moderator and after jiggling the lamp about resorted to cloth tape on the moderator.

Been playing about subsequently and tried an old rifle scope mount to hold the IR. Popped it onto the picatinny and it works an absolute treat! Maybe not exactly how it was designed but it works well.
