Hi Guys,
I butchered a muntjac doe this morning, I have kept the two rear shanks, is it ok to give them to my lab
cheers Mike

I've always given fore-legs & cooked thigh bones to our pointers over the last 20 years with no ill effects.

I've always avoided the weight bearing bones of the legs. Reason being if like my previous dog they have strong jaws they bones will crack and shatter into very sharp shards and if swallowed could cause real issues. On the other hand if like my current dog there is a chance they'll crack their teeth trying to chew the bone up. This has worked for me with no issues. All dogs get every other bone though as my butchery skills aren't good enough to clean all the meat off so it's a waste to bin them. Dogs pick them clean and bits like ribs get chewed up and digested.

My pointer gets munty feet as his reward. He loves them. Hair and all. Won't eat fresh kidneys, But loves feet.
On the flip side, they make my spaniel sick. So i guess it depends on the dog.

Pretty much as nun hunter said, weight bearing bones CAN cause problems, albeit rarely. My dogs get any scraps going, usually freeze it into portion sized bags for them and put the bones separately

Hey blokes, dogs are wild animals in pet disguise and they evolved by eating the soft bits first and then chewed on the bones next until they were hungry enough and keen enough to go catch another.

I break sambar leg bones with the back of the axe for my dogs....have done it for 40 years and 20 years before that pig and roo bones. They pick up shards and splinters around the chopping block like a hen picking up wheat.

100% Safe. As long as it is raw.
Never give a dog any bone that has been cooked.

Give my dogs bones from legs, side of a rib cage. A Neck bone.
If the bone is not eaten in 2-3 hours take it away and bin it, as it is now a toy.

Weight Bearing bones I let them chew down on.. but generally remove once stripped or start to brake. Everything else is game on!

Spine, ribs and head are best as meals. Leg bones can break into long shards (weight bearing bones) so as before only really a treat to strip flesh off. No to cooked bones.

Mine have the ribs spine and f legs kidneys trimmings. when I make a stew they have the rear leg bones.

Not too much as the poo goes a bit chalky.
