Took a benelli m2 3 months old to see how much they would offer me £300 to £400 I paid £1,450 this is at a shop
Is this a rip off

My maths may be wring but take off the VAT before seeing if it is as much as a rip off as it seems. So with the VAT removed that's £1,160. The other way to look at it is that second hand a thing can be worth only 50% of the new price. So that's £725. Either or either was the RFD will, I assume, need to stand by the item when he sells it on. He'll usually put a 50% mark up on what he pays the seller. So that is £400 plus 50% = £600 window price. That way he at least has a reasonable chance to find a buyer. But the only true value of a thing's worth is open market of willing buyer and willing seller. So there's always the auction houses.
Yes a rip off. My favourite semi-auto. Best price in gun shops is about £900. Need to factor in the gun shops margin - many work on minimum margin so could be that. Also semi-auto’s are much slower to move than o/U’s so it’s not a great trade in. I’ll give you more than £400 if you want to sell it. PM me, if you want.
Would this be a shop near Thame? Friend of mine is retiring from firearms and decided sell, S1 Remington 1100 almost as new £0.00, CZ 452 17HMR, immaculate £50.00.

On Guntrader there are six at under £1,000 with the lowest price being £795. So to sell quickly any RFD has got to compete with that. It's a bit like houses. In that on any street or development of near identical houses there's a low price none have sold for less than and a high price none have sold for more than. Any potential buyer who wants to re-sell and make a quick turnaround and profit will have those in mind. Same with second hand guns especially if any warranty is non-transferable for the original owner. It is alas how it is. One made £600 on the hammer at Holt's a 2022 date in the August 2025 sale. In December 2025 a 2019 date one made £500 on the hammer. Many RFD's will use that as a guide to what to pay in case they need to dispose of it at a future date through auction sale.

Sounds like they didnt want it, by offering a silly low price you walked away, if you took it they have plenty of time and margin for earning.

I bought a BSA Meteor that the owner had proudly fitted a Pecar 4x81 sight to from Southam's for £55 plus commission last month. Wanted the rifle to despatch squirrels with and the 'scope to pass on to a friend. So took that and the mounts off and he has them.
The rifle was in fact too feeble when tried on Wednesday. So that afternoon I took the rifle with its original sights that it came to local chattel auction. It sold today. On the hammer? £80. So after commission was paid at Southams and when settled from that chattel auction I've made £3.00 and my friend has a free Pecar 4x81 'scope.

the market is swamped with guns, why would a shop pay big money to have it sitting on a shelve for ever and a day!
It is alas, true. That £400 is four canisters of powder that will likely sell quickly and being powder is more likely to easily find buyers than one £400 invested in a self-loading shotgun. My French 12 bore boxlock ejector I bought from Southam's some time before covid for £240 hammer didn't even make a bid of £35 when it was offered there in December 2025 with a reserve of but £100. So back home it came.
Not a rip off, if they offer you that price and you accept it they haven't ripped you off, bve that up at ut you have mugged yourself off,
they would have that up at £1100, not £600 for a quick sale, i will never understand people who sell guns to dealers, my mate who was minted used to do it, he would buy a £7000 shotgun, decide he wasn't keen on it and sell it back for £4000 a week later, and buy something else,

id give you £450 for it6-7 years ago i have 3 mint miroku 3800 shot guns, i had one on GT, a trader bought one from me for the asking price of £800, a few weeks later i saw it on his website for £1200, its gone down £100 a time, he still has it to this day advertised, its now at £700,

Try selling it on a sale or return basis. You say what you want for it . See how long it sits on the rack .
