JustBack From Namibia, Paperwork, Border Force, Flights And Checks

Just back from a great hunting and fishing trip to Namibia they have had good rains so the place is very green. First trip since CV19 so more paperwork and checks, below just some facts and observations for anyone considering going to Africa this year

Flew Virgin from Heathrow, informed them a week in advance about firearm, it makes no difference you just fill out the forms then wait for security to take the rifle and ammo box. Went through security then waited an hour for Border Force to arrive, number check on rifle then good to go. When you are on the plane the Virgin guys find your seat and give you a copy of the paperwork

Johannesburg, you have to show a negative test inside a 72 hour window which we did, it has to be uploaded on to a world system that SA and Namibia recognise, it has a QR code on it but no one scanned it. Rifle and ammo checked straight through so no aggravation at J/burg airport

Virgin now partner with Airlink who do carry firearms, they were on time and very efficient, at Windhoek go through security, show your negative CV test again no scanning pick up your bags and now the Police/ Firearms unit is outside so you go out through the door turn left, police paperwork straightforward 10 minutes

Return was straightforward however the SA authorities want a negative CV test cert so outfitter arranged that for us, 360 Euros ( That did include the tester coming to the lodge) for the two of us, the only people who checked it were at the Namibian guys at Windhoek we were never asked for it in SA

Summary, there is more paperwork than normal but I along with many others have waited 2 years to go on a hunt cancelled back in March 2020. Airlink are very good I would use them again and they are expanding in Africa as SAA appear to be doing nothing

Good news, good write up, thank you.

We are heading to the Eastern Cape in September via Johannesburg and then Port Elizabeth with Airlink. Pleased to hear it went smoothly. Everything seems in order, only concern was the Covid testing required. The way out will be OK but we will come from the hunting area straight to PE airport on the way back so I guess we will have to get the Outfitter to arrange this for us.

At some stage the South Africans will drop the Negative test requirements but that does not look imminent. My understanding is you will only require. negative Test to enter SA, given you are hunting in SA and the PE flights are internal i don’t believe you will need to do a test for your return flights. We had to do tests for the return leg as we were flying back in to SA from Namibia so that counts as reentering SA from abroad. I hope your hunt goes well.

Incidentally the BF guys at Heathrow issued me with a temporary Rifle Export ticket as part of the checking the rifle in just in case I ended up in SA with the rifle. That would save you getting the Temp Export letter ahead of time via BF. Yes Airlink were very good I would recommend them, if SAA don’t get going soon Airlink will be hoovering up their customers

Ah right, understood, thanks for that. Yes we are looking forward to it, we too were booked for 20… then 21… hope we make it in 22!

You need to check what the country you are going to requires and then what your Airline/ Carrier requires. For SA they are one of the few countries that require a form from U.K. Border Force as proof of Temporary Export, you apply prior to travel by Email or get the BF guys to do you a form on the day you check in with them. Most airlines will just give you a form on the day of travel to cover their admin, I don’t know the requirements for NZ. Good luck with it all

Yeah Ive covered the bases to NZ, you need to apply for there vistors FAL. Just wondered if there was new forms at T5 Heathrow that I did no know about thanks.
