The vaccine is very good, and in challenge studies has prevented disease from bordetella and parainfluenza virus 15 months after a single administration.
The problem being that kennel cough can be caused by a multitude of different viruses (and to a lesser extent bacteria).
The vaccine is not prefect but I am convinced that vaccinated dogs that get kennel cough get a less serious form of the condition that recovers much more quickly.
I disagree with the cough medicines. I have tried them, but not even slightly convinced over efficacy. If you do a bit of digging there is little evidence that they do anything for coughs in people! I read a study once that found milk chocolate more effective than any commercial cough medicine. The issue is the trachea (windpipe) and something is going badly wrong if you get any down there.
Just take the collar off and walk on a harness. Try to prevent the dog doing too much exercise or getting over excited.
