There has been an increasingly toxic atmosphere between Labour and the countryside in recent years which has created a deep divide between Cardiff Bay and rural Wales.
Jeremey Miles and Vaughan Gething are standing for the Labour leadership here in Wales, and the successful candidate will also become our new First Minister. This is an opportunity for Labour to reset its relationship with the countryside.
Our countryside has never been so fragile, and it has never been more important to have a government that understands, listens, and respects rural communities. The issues are there in black and white – such as the new Sustainable Farming Scheme, plans to ban game shooting through the back door, and Natural Resources Wales’s continuing purchase of productive farmland to fulfil its tree planting agenda, threatening food security.
