Labrador Problem -

Hi all.

Having a problem with my Labrador at the moment and seeing if there is some advice what I haven't though of.

All of a sudden he has been doing an annoying but dangerous habit in the wrong environment

His recall! So when i give the signal he returns but then thinks its a game and runs off, then returns jumps around and runs off again. The type of excited run where they lower there arse right down and go into full on zoomies sprint!

I have gone back to basics with him with a long line and his recall is bang on what I want, but as soon as he is off the lead again, it is non existent. I say its non existent, he has recall when another dog approaches but if no one is about then it is a ****ing free for all!

He is one year old, intact (booking in soon to get them off).

apart from this he is and has been a fantastic dog. I just want to nip this in the arse before it gets worse.

Any advice?
Cheers

You are forgetting your top dog!

You’re the boss, so lay the law down!!!

That’s all I’m going to say.

I'd get him tired out in a different environment before starting sessions of training. If you're near the sea, an hour or two of running madly around the beach and swimming (the dog, not you), should blow the initial excitment out of him.

My previois bitch was almost unmanageable until she'd had a good dose of exercise first.

Not sure why you think having his nuts off is the answer.
Id stop him getting any distance before calling him back, dont let them know you cant catch them

We aren't getting his nuts off for this.

Any female dog he is around he is foaming at the lips and has one as thick as a coke can 😅.

Hmm.
He is calling the shots. Next time (in a safe place) when he refuses to come back you run off in the opposite direction and keep running away until he realises you are not where you were. He should come back at this point - lots of praise when he does usually works.
Repeat as required….

My lab is five now and was like this when young. We went through gun dog training but very occasionally he wouldnt recall, normally after a long foot stalk off lead at heel. I think it was pent up energy from being calm. We kept on the basic training and he calmed as he aged. We kept him entire. He is now a super dog, great on the deer and as a family dog.

Don’t cut his nuts off. That’s bollocks (no pun intended). Why mutilate a perfectly healthy dog. ****ing vets need to wind their necks in. Far too keen to castrate dogs. There are some serious health risks with that nonsense that are far from theoretical yet funnily enough nobody ever mentions them

He’s a Labrador. Easy to train. Not aggressive. No excuse for cutting his nuts off.

He just had too much energy at the mo. Take him somewhere where he can run if off then take him somewhere else to work. That will help obviously but also let him understand that work and play are different

Haven't been told by any vets to get them off and this problem isn't the reason we are getting them off.

As previously said the reason for his balls being removed are the fact he wants to shag every bitch he sees and his foaming at the lips when a bitchbis close by. I dont want him getting any bitch pregnant accidentally and we aren't studding him out.

God forbid you have teenage boys!

Ah bless! Takes me back……

Less of the insults please!

Change the pattern of training and create a new game that is a reward and a reason to come back. But it’s hard work

Also not fair on the dog to keep getting frustrated with bitches,I knew a total dick once who thought it funny watching his dog get stupid around bitches on heat, hopefully hes passed on by now , not the dog.
My lab had his nuts off at 18months and stopped dribbling and frothing at mouth at every bitch he met. Also much less fussy eater now but great on deer.

I've owned and worked Labs 30 years. In all that time I've only had 3 dogs, rest bitches.
Dogs I owned all seemed to take 2 seasons to settle down enough for me to trust them out of sight. Bitches generally ok first season then polishing off next one.
Dogs just seem to take longer to knuckle down to work, bitches serious much earlier on.
Noticed that dogs with large amount of field trials in the breeding seem to me to be more energetic, bordering on hectic sometimes. I try to source new pups from people I know, where I've been able to watch the sire/dam work. Anything that needs constant whistling or shouting to keep in line, not for me.
I personally think that your dog is just a youngster,if not age wise, then at heart. Time will slow him down as he matures, gets more serious in his ways and settles down.
The fact he's coming back when called shows biddable and willing to please, just getting the devil in him now and again like all immature animals/people do.
Wishing you all the best with him.

Sounds like a pup ?, despite what some folks say about the breed they do not train themself . Please find a good trainer near you , this kind of thing escalates

I would be doing the training in a highly controlled environment.
One where he wouldn't have much opportunity to run away.
The recall back to you should already end with the dog going into the sit position in front of you. This is just the basics. Work on this and give a food reward, like a piece of cocktail sausage. This can be done in a hallway or alleyway down the side of the house, free from other distractions and difficult for him to carry on with his game.
You must get the "Upper Hand". Every time you go through a door or gateway, make him sit. You go through first, then call him, make him sit again when he's through. You are the pack leader, not him, you call all the shots.
