Land Rovers-forced labour

I’ve a 2003 Disco td5. Chassis has no rust and only 130k on the engine- I thought this would give me a few years of service as a stalking truck once I’d done some preventative maintenance (all oils and filters incl transfer/gear changed and prop greased)

WRONG!
In the past 18 months I’ve had to replace:
Return valve in fuel filter
Both front wheel bearings and abs sensors
Front steering bar
Fuel pump
Injector wiring loom
Injector o rings and copper washers
Rocker cover gasket
Fog lights

At the weekend I got a feint whiff of derv, then noted it all over my driveway :( Why on earth did they design a fuel pipe to run across the tank and be under pressure/wear from cross members and why not use a braided hose ffs!!

They are great vehicles off road and comfy on it, but they really do force you to become fairly intimate with them!

Mitz Gritton 2004 welding on the cross member that supports the radiator, rear brake cylinder 198000 k absolutely disgusting 😃

Replacing things that wear out on a 22 year old vehicle, who would have thought that would be necessary ?
Agreed on fuel pump perhaps & steering rod, but I’ve had Toyotas and Hondas with double the miles and less gone wrong.

It’ll be a new vehicle by the time I sell it at this rate of repairs 🤣

I feel your pain having got rid of my own last year…..they’re an absolute pig to work on.
You can generally see the part you need to replace, you can generally touch it, you may even be able to get a spanner to it, but as sure as shite stinks you wont be able to remove it without removing half the contents of the engine bay and the radiator besides.
On the plus side, when they’re working they’re probably the best shooting transport out there.

When I had a turbo diesel 90, it used to cost me the same in repairs and maintenance whether it was sat outside the house most of the time, doing 2,000 miles a year, or whether I was using it for work every day and doing 8,000 miles per year.

I was forced to drive LR Defenders so wouldn't touch one again even if I was paid to do so
I made the mistake of buying a Discovery 4, that cured me of any affection for the brand
As for their being "great off roaders" - well, they can with a lot of expensive work be turned into great off-roaders but can't touch the likes of Toyota, Jeep etc for straight out of the dealership off-road capability
Thanks for your post though, reminds me why I despise & detest landies

Being forced to drive a first a series 2 passed my test in one, then the series 3 turned me away from them for life.
A buddy has a Disco 2, lovely car to drive. He accepts that it will need work every year, final drive, suspension, half shafts are but some of the last few years joys for him.
He says, it will stay with him till he croaks 😳
