Landrover - Defender vs. Discovery

I use a Landcruiser Colorado - It has permanent fourwheel drive and a standard rear diff-lock which the disco and landy lack, excellent ground clearance and decent build quality which they also lack. It has a lot more room in it than either a disco or a LR 90 and I regularly use it for wooding and for carrying carcasses as well as towing. It also has 8 seats and is much nicer than a landy or disco 1 or 2 to drive. Why stick to Solihull's dodgy products when there are better vehicles out there?

first of all they have made a good disco yet, buy a toyota pickup or colorado or amozan you just cant go wrong
trust me been working on 4x4s for years if everybody had a toyota id be out of work

I get by with my Disco 2, I did drown one in a ford once Not the wagons fault though, pilot error.

Well I have done the whole Landrover quest, Series 1 and 1 lightweight, Series II & IIA, Series III, Defender 90 & 110 & crewcab all with various engine/transmission variations then I bought a V8 lpg Disco 1 manual and liked it more grunt for towing, smoother for lamping cheap for parts if you go to the right places. Then I went to Ian Farringtons for a go on the pigs and he runs a 300 tdi Auto on Kingpin Amazon tyres after retrieving a couple of Deer from interesting places I went out and purchased a 99 plate 3.9 V8 Auto on LPG for £1300 one owner from new and its the Premium model so it has the electric seats/windows/double sunroofs/aircon/cruise control put on one set of Kingpin Amazons for £236 for the four delievred to the door and hey presto a capable 4x4 that will go anywhere, drives smooth and gives me the equivelant in cost to normal fuel of 34 mpg and a bit more on a steady run all for £1536.00 with no troubles other than self inflicted ones for the last 16 months. Find me some other foreign 4x4 that can be that capable for the same money and that I can repair myself for next to nothing in new parts.

As for space, during the Fallow buck season I had two large bucks in the back, one 13 month old son sound asleep in his seat, one snoring wife in her seat after collecting from my parents on my way home my rifle dog and associated stalking kit whilst towing 2.5 tons of firewood kindly split by my father in law on the trailer what more could you want

defender or discovery more than capable offroad with decent tyres and decent driver will leave any pick up standing disco has a better heater but as i,ve always said jap 4x4,s have good heaters to keep occupants warm when you are bogged and waiting for a land rover to come back and pull you out!! folk always complaining about land rover heaters but what are you worrying about heaters for? your too soft if you keep moaning about heaters its all part of the experience to be soaked and cold

Someone actually stole a Disco UNBELIEVABLE

Yup,
It was up on the ramp at the local tractor/4x4 garage in Germany and a bloke comes to the mechanic and said he was my son. Mechanic rebuilt the brakes quick and gave him the keys off he went. Car was found 1 year later after being stored in a barn for 11.8 months with an Italian newspaper in it, I am a brit so I guess it was an Italian what whipped it.
Bought a new Hyundai Terracan afterwards now it has 178K kms with zero problems or rust.

why do people brash on about crappy old landrovers? get a hilux, it will be the best thing you ever do, 5 seats, comfy on the road, goes anywhere and further than a defender will (rear diff lock, so no cross axles) better on fuel and in 4 years and 100,000 miles all i've had to do is adjust the handbrake cable.

sorry bud, the defender and early discos have permanent 4x4 system and a centre diff, but without ifs and gives much better wheel travel and articulation if you want serious off road, and can tow way better and more stably than jap,

but dont get a v8 landy, there trouble

I know what landys have, specification-wise, the problem I have with them is shoddy build quality, poor reliability and price. I have been all over Africa and the middle-east in Toyota's without having one miss a beat. The best 3.5 ton tow tug I have driven is the good old Landcruiser Amazon, 4.2 diesel - way better than any landy, much more comfortable, stable and better equiped, has centre, rear and front difflocks as standard and doesn't go wrong all the time.
