Evening all , quick question I did my dsc1 a while back and was looking at adding the above course as it was my understanding that it is no longer taught , issued with a dsc1 course , fir some reason other day I looked at my certificate and on it there is “ large game meat hygiene theory “ is this part of that course or nothing to do with it ?
Thanks

Does you certificate give a trained hunter number?
If so it looks like you've already got it covered.

Large game meat hygiene theory is now a part of the DSC1 course
covering the general hygiene, inspection and diseases aspects

it does not give you trained hunter Number unless you also add on the LGMH course (or Wild GMH which covers Small game as well) - available as a standalone or bolt on to your DSC1 course sometimes
The course content for LGMH is not dissimilar to the stuff already included in DSC1 but does involve actual inspection (via video or actual carcass)

some might say this is a callous money grubbing scheme to charge twice for the same content - I couldn't possibly comment

It has a number on it but I think it said certificate or candidate number ? So I guess that’s not trained hunter

Mine from 2018 has Candidate No:, and the last point says: Core and Large Game Meat Hygiene enabling the legal supply of large game to approved game handling establishments.
The number after my Candidate No: is also my Trained Hunter Number and carried through to DSC2, it is also my hunter number in Europe.

Hope that's helpful.

I have a DSC1 and trained hunter status with a number for tags.
I have mislaid my certificate (hopefully temporarily) . Can I get a duplicate.
Just phoned BASC, closed for the weekend. No panic just asking the question.

I went to Mike (gamekeeper1) who does large game and meat hygiene course.
Gives you the number and a lot quicker and cheaper than DSC2 just seen he as one in EAST SUSSEX .

Contact him he does them in a lot of areas i traveled 1 1/2 hours E/W well worth it and loved the course

Hi guys I know this thread is a few months old but I’m currently doing the DSC1 and only just discovered the option of going the LGMH course as opposed to the DSC2.

I’ve found a course provider running it as a one day course for £200.

Does anyone know if there’s any revision or training material available and is it similar to the large game and meat hygiene theory that’s part of the DSC1?

Also, if I obtain trained hunter status via this route would it certify me as a ‘fit and competent person’ for NatureScot (I can’t see why not but thought it’s worth asking if anyone knows) or would I need DSC2 specifically just for that?

Thanks in advance.

I did mine with NGO
gamekeeper1 on here
It was 4 hours and fairly fast paced with a lot of info
If you have no experience then it will feel a bit like overload

No advance reading needed but obviously you will get more out of it if you have some experience

Bds have a field guide to diseases book you can buy

But this book is v good for inspection as the author was a carcass inspector for slaughterhouses

Someone may have a copy of david Stratton (donnington deer management) inspection book they might give up which is also v good

For the final Q. I thought you could now get fit and proper with just DSC1

Thanks for the reply. That book is out of stock but I do need to purchase the field guide from BDS.

I just checked on NatureScot and the requirement is either DSC1 or DSC2.

I think a lot of people have gone down this route of just doing the LGMH course with NGO to obtain trained hunter status. Think I might be joining them 😜
