Wanted: Larsen bait birds?

Just a thought, but with the recent talk of Larsen traps, would it be any use to start a thread on here for anyone wanting a bait bird and where they are so anyone near to them can supply one when they become available, I know that is how it works around this area, and all my birds caught so far this year have moved on to new homes, so was wondering if it would be helpful to others?

Put this on here a couple of years ago, but think it's worth repeating. To catch your first judas bird you sometimes need to think outside the box. I'm lucky enough to have a decent size garden backing on to open countryside. Set the Larsen trap to one side of the garden and struggled to get the first one,noticed the magpies could almost tell the time I feed the dogs in the dog pen. They would be straight in picking up any bits the dogs didn't touch. Just to add my dog pen is large 25 feet by 12 feet open topped. Anyway set the Larsen inside the pen with dog dish and scraps inside . First year result 35 .

When I’ve been unable to get a call bird in the past, I’ve made a small nest from hay then stuck a couple of rubber eggs in it. Pop that in the Larsen with a plastic magpie decoy in the other side and you’re away.

Only if you are satisfying the requirements of the general licence you are operating under. I.e protection of nesting wild birds of conservation concern or preventing direct attack on livestock.

You may be asked to prove you have birds that are of conservation concern nesting in your garden, or have lambing sheep in your garden or close by.

If you’re not doing it for the above reasons, it is not legal, same as shooting them.

Protecting just ‘nesting birds’ isn’t sufficient any more, the wording has been updated thanks to Packham and his chronies. The birds must be of conservation concern i.e. on the red or amber list, so just having a blackbird nesting in the area or the likelihood of something else is not good reason.

Perfectly legal to trap in your garden so long as the conditions of the general licence are followed

the GLs are badly worded i think, yes you can argue magpies in a garden. id think its unlikely you will wver get asked about why your trapping them but if you do the people asking the questions will probably have a body camera. make sure you dont say something you might regret

Larsen traps are quite emotive with Joe Public, even with those who don’t normally have an opinion.

The welfare of the call bird and the season need to be appropriate too, a guy near me was threatened with charges due to having a dead call bird in a Larsen and a ladder trap full of jackdaws and rooks in early September.
The wildlife officer took the view that since the nesting season was over, protecting nesting birds didn’t apply as a good reason to take and kill the crows.
The dead magpie was examined in case it died of neglect but nothing could be proven.
Wild birds directive again, Packham doesn’t have much to do with it.

Anyone pestered by starlings - every morning I have two rascals in the Larsen before the one remaining magpie comes by. You don’t think he sends them do you?
