I set out early on the last day of the fallow buck season, leaving home about 4:15. I was hopeful that I might get a buck as I had seen a few over the previous week but not managed to get a shot at one for various reasons. Anyway about half an hour into my journey to the ground I was going to stalk I pulled up at a junction, turned right and started to pick up speed. Just as I rounded the first bend I spotted a fallow doe running along the road towards me. I hit the brakes and came to a stop but the doe kept running obviously disorientated by the full beam. She hit the front of the pickup with a loud bang which was followed by a cloud of hair flying up and onto the bonnet and windscreen. The doe stopped for a couple of seconds and then ran on past. It was still dark at this point so I pulled over, put the hazards on, grabbed the head torch and gave front of the pickup a quick check. Fortunately no damage but hair everywhere, stuck to the moisture on the pickup.
I then turned round and went back in the direction the doe took and spotted her about 200 yards further on, standing in the middle of the road on a bend. I put the hazards on again and after a couple of minutes she cleared the fence and took off across the field. Fortunately she didn’t appear any worse of the wear.
I did manage a fallow pricket later that evening so it was an interesting last day on the fallow.
