So @SimpleSimon , you've been @Albertaboy 'd!

SO, with a 45-70 variation in, what will you buy? Marlin? Winchester? Henry? Chiappa?

Scrummy

I see that Chiappa are on the exhibitor list for the Stalking Show this weekend. I'll definitely have a look at their offerings, my heart isn't totally set on the Marlin just yet...
I've just seen the Chiappa in a nice laminate stock/cerakote barrel configuration online 🤔

Enjoy sir!

He's a great bloke but he's also an absolute perfectionist. My "fear" is going away with about 50 different loads to try and becoming utterly bamboozled when all I wanted was something that goes where I'm pointing it and knocks over deer 😂
Fortunately , the 45/70 is an easy cartridge to reload . It isn't that picky . There is a lot of good data available that will cut down your search for a good load . I can't help much as the powders I use , like IMR 4895 and 3031 aren't available in the UK anymore . Drop stalker308 a line , he has some UK friendly data .

Reloader 7 is still available in the uk though like other powders is hard to find at times.
2400 is good for a lot of target loads . I use both in the .444 Marlin which in my humble opinion is far better suited for the uk .
The .444 kills deader than a dead thing at sensible ranges . I have never felt under gunned when hunting Boar compared to the 45-70 either .

If you're looking at that price range , have a look at Pedersolis winchester 86 models . The 86 is a very slick rifle , but you will have to go with a scout scope configuration as they are top eject .

The 444 is a really good cartridge , with proper bullets you wouldn't be under gunned hunting anything in these parts either . It is just as effective as the 45/70 when loaded with heavier , 300ish gr , bullets . The only downside to it these days is availability of ammo , brass and bullets , especially the heavier weights , around here . A younger friend of mine inherited his late uncles Marlin 444 , it's a first year of production model , that's accounted for a lot of Moose , Elk and Bears , it's a great old rifle .

I'm waiting to find out if my bid was successful on a H&R Officers Model Trapdoor , I'll know this Friday . It's starting bid price is a lot higher than the above rifle , which is very similiar .

An update , someone wanted the Officers Model more than I did , by about $500 bones . It's a nice rifle , but it's not that nice . The search continues .

the ruger marlin is made great , shoots good have shot 1 moa and less at 100m but can also be a bit fussy as it don't like a clean barrel or a warm barrel

this is a target from last week, then the 5th shot didn't hit the target , can be pretty random, nothing feels loose on it
