Main dealer rip off...

My Lexus (paid £800 for it) went in for an airbag recall, they did a health check on it, quoting approx 2k to rectify, 6 months later I found the brake pads had actually grown since the health check. They rely on you being uneducated and gullible.

My wife's Mitsubishi Space Wagon went in to a Mitsubishi main dealer for a minor engine noise - was told it needed a new engine - walked out and 135,000 miles later sold it with the same engine and the same minor engine noise and no other problems.
Also (with same car) went in to get a bodywork scratch removed and repainted - when I went to collect it the new paint did not match and the manager had the cheek to tell me that the car had obviously been resprayed in the past and that was the reason for the mismatch - I was unimpressed and pointed that the paintwork was original and that perhaps he should get a new job or retire!

I was in the garage having the van serviced and in the corner was a Lamborghini in bits having the clutch done for a bill of £2k (£1.5k for the clutch a VW part, a day for the engine out, and a day for being put back in).

Lamborghini were looking to charge £12k the same job, but taking £4k for the part, and charging 5 days labour.

£1200 to replace a leaking brake fluid valve under the car at porsche guildford. I challenged it asking if the system had lost fluid and as such was dangerous to drive. No it hadnt. We looked at the valve and it was wet from the road. I also declined the £80 to remove a handful of leaves from the front spoiler ducts.

I can beat you all, took my boat in for a service at our Yamaha dealer, went to collect it, and they gave me the bill, included was change oil filter, and dispose of engine oil, I called out the manager ( who happens to be one of my customers) and offered to sell him my unique fourstroke/ two stroke engine, to say he was not amused says the least.

Does anyone here actually work in vehicle servicing and care to explain how the cost of running the business raises the cost of any repair job above the price of the cheapest Chinese-est pattern parts available ex-internet plus maybe half an hour of mates rates labour?

Ha ha ha, some of these replies are brilliant. I can honestly say I have never taken any car to a Main Dealer for actual work. Heard way too many stories and know all about the exorbitant costs. My mum used to get stiffed for years before I finally persuaded her to use my mechanic. She loved the massive reduction in bills, the care she was offered, the honest explanations of work needed and the fact her cars actually worked when they were returned.

I recall going to Audi in Kidlington a few years back to ask their service parts desk for some grommets for the headlight trim on my Audi S2. The guy behind the desk took great glee in telling me that I was mistaken and that Audi had never made an S2. I sorted of played along as it was fun, so he brought out a colleague who also confirmed that their "system" confirmed that no S2 existed, that I was mistaken and i definitely meant A2 rather than S2.

I then told them that I wouldn't be seen dead in that coffin carrier and that maybe they would allow me to escort them to the car park outside so I could show them. They came out, almost sniggering. Which stopped fairly abruptly when in front of them was a mint condition Audi S2 3b in gleaming Emerald Pearl. I pointed to my slightly wonky headlight trim and said "I need a grommet for the side of this trim please. It will need to fit an Audi S2" The sniggering stopped at that point.

Naturally they couldn't help me because Audi seem to have a policy of not giving a sh*t about any modern customers, let alone those who maintain the very classics that made them famous. Porsche, BMW and Mercedes ensure a fine back availability of classic parts. Audi, not so much. They really are complete wan*ers.

Just a rant!

I work in Automotive so I know the deal but these examples seems to have much more of a mark up!

My 12 year old Rav4 which only does a few thousand miles a year now is having a service, Toyota were competitive on service costs and since they wash it and local garage doesn't and it is still filthy from the game season it has gone there. I thought it was only worth a few £thousand but looking on Autotrader with car prices having gone silly it appears to still be worth what I bought it for 5.5 years and 60k miles ago so it is having some overdue attention.

Managed to negotiate them down to match local for brakes and pads which I expected to be needed so that's ok.

The undertray is damaged - the little flap to empty the sump hit a rock...I have it fastened with two cable ties - Toyota advisory - £400!!!! ebay - £54 delivered.

Driver's side washer jet is not as powerful as the near side - I already changed the T piece myself (for £2) so it likely just needs a poke to clear some debris - Toyota advisory - £73!

What's the most a dealer has tried to take the mickey with on your vehicles chaps?
£2350 for lights for european driving, bought the car for only £4500....

Audi. Complete tossers.

Ebay £300

Found out later, originals had lever switch at rear and didnt need to bother buying any but this was a Forces Germany thing (another set of absolute buffoons).

My dad went to Main dealer for a service and they spilt hydraulic fluid in the electrics. when the car went back totally dead he asked for them to show him what happened they pointed at the nearest pipe and said it leaked.( Not a hydraulic pipe) When he told them that he worked as a design engineer for a hydraulic hose company for 45 years in got awkward quickly

That reminded me of something similar…my first girlfriend had a little Vauxhall corsa, it went to the dealer for I think just a service. All fine, until a couple of days later I spotted on the carpet a line of paint spray the same as car colour, lifting the mat up in the footwell there was a load of broken glass…clearly they had either crashed or crashed into the car and had to respray it and replace a window…they completely denied anything had happened until I showed them the paint overspray and the glass…made them completely re-valet and clean the call and got her £1000 back of the purchase price since they were lying buggers.

One of my beaters has a Mitsubishi Evo. Whilst tootling along in the courtesy car provided whilst Evo in for service, his own car overtook him like he was going backwards 🤣he went straight to the garage involved and let rip. No bills and they haven't seen him again since.

Sadly the days of being able to repair all but the most complex faults with a typical diy toolkit are long gone….I have an old
1999 saab 9-5 which is the household taxi / car of all jobs….even this prehistoric 20 odd year old car is laden with electronics and the need for a tech2 plug in. unit to diagnose and recode items.
Anything to create opportunities to overcharge and underserve the buying public…. Pffff

I have a 2012 toyota hilux which had an airbag recall during the pandemic. I took it in to toyota and they replaced it while I waited. When I went to collect it their customer services informed me there had been an accident and they had damaged the rear canopy. There was a scuff across the whole of the back of the canopy but fortunately just cosmetic. To be fair they did offer to touch it up the following week when their spray man was in. I had it booked in for them to do it but I became a covid contact so had mandatory isolation at that time. I took it as a sign and never went back incase I came out with more problems than what I went with

Not service related but my then girlfriend after returning from antipodean travels wanted to buy a new red Renault 5 from a local dealer, said dealer advised none in their stock, none available for dealer transfer & none due for delivery into the U.K. for the foreseeable future - offered her various unpopular other colours from stock if she didn't want to wait indefinitely for a red one.

This was well before t'interweb so it took a few telephone calls to a couple of other dealers to find one in stock at one of them & the other saying they had located several at other dealers that they could transfer into their stock... needless to say she bought the one that was in stock.

Youngster at work got quoted 800 quid (15yrs ago) for a partial respray after someone had scraped down the side of their car and left their paint behind.
I cleaned it back for them to almost perfect in about 10min during tea break, with a rag and some thinners.

You only have to mention VW main dealerships to boil my whatsit ..................................... absolute fekkers!

Recently had a colleague show me a video of a fox eating the wiring underneath his new VW van..

The eco friendly coating on the wires is apparently Soy based....

Pretty monstrous bill at the VW dealership 🤭
