Mauser M12 Impact in 30-06

ejg,
I would expect the barrel of a .30-06 to last 5,000 rounds without a detectable loss of accuracy. How many will shoot a hunting rifle that much?

If the barrel ( and rifle ) is made by Begara, why not consider a Begara rifle or a Winchester Model 7, which will have a barrel made by FN or Begara?

Get a knowledgeable person to examine the bore of a used rifle and, if possible, arrange to shoot it.
I just bought a .223, made in 1995, with a filthy bore, which cleaned up nicely and shot a 3/4 inch group first time out, with just USGI M855 ammunition.

Edi,
where did you get this from? Any reliable sources on this?

I said as far as I am aware, it is the talk at the IWA from gun manufacturing people. If 100% from Bergara it would be the positive point about the rifle. In my view at least.

Southern, exactly what I say why not rather buy a different rifle without the issue.
Another thing, M12 is as far (as I am aware) also available with a stainless paint look... Meaning an Ilaflon coating to make it more resistent to weather....but the inside of the barrel is just as unprotected as with the blued barrel. At least if the rust appears on the outside of a rifle one might get the hint to check the inside of the barrel. In this case the outside say's weatherproof and the inside is not. a fake stainless rifle.....

The Sauer all-weather, like the SIG SHR 970 which I have ( 2 ), made by J.P. Sauer, is a stainless steel barrel with Iaflon coating.

The Winchester XPR has a very tough coating, same as on their automatic shotguns.

The Remington 700 XCR is the very weatherproof, having a vapor deposition coating of titanium nitride.

How many people actually wear out barrels? Not that many I’ll bet. If the barrel can last around 6k that’s more than enough to see me out, or, if it lasts say 3 or 4 years then it’s cheap enough to be considered a consumable item and just be replaced.

This is exactly how I view it. I doubt I will wear the barrel out and will probably replace it out of newrifledesireness before.

Or just buy a Sauer. change the barrel in 2 minutes. New barrels are not that expensive, and there are plenty for sale now folks are going to Blazer and sauer 404 etc. However some other good points made, and it may be nice to have a new gun every so often. You'll probably fancy a change y the time you wear a barrel out.

I can’t find a price for replacement Sauer 202 barrels in the UK, for some reason our dealers are reluctant to publish prices, I can find S/H at c£500, but not applicable because why would I replace used with used? I’m never buying a used rifle again, it’s false economy.
I can find new in the US at $800 in 30-06 so probably c£1000 here.

Have a look on ivy Thorne sporting. Or there is a euro website which I forget the name of. A Google search for sayer should find it. They have lots of opting on there.

I’m just going for the M12, less hassle, even if I could manage to wear one out, I can’t see the point of changing barrel so unless it’s to change calibre, even then there is all the buggering around re-zeroing etc and I don’t believe you don’t need to do it.
Sauer say over 10,000 rounds through a .308 if looked after (according to Ivythorne), so I can only assume Mauser will be the same as they are the same group.

Sure you would have to tweek the zero if you changed the barrel. Like you say 10,000 rounds is expected from mild calibres so should be many years before you "have" to change it. I don't re zero my sauer when changing barrels as I have a scope for each calibre and two actions. So just swap the barrel and put the correct zero'd scope on (leupold QR mounts) and away I go. Does mean having a few bob tied up in scopes but I couldn't be doing with altering zero.
Anyway hope you enjoy your new rifle and have many successes with it.

M12 barrels are made by Mauser not any other firm. Been stood next the machine that makes them in Isny so I’m not saying this as something I heard or have been told.

I have the standard M12 in 30-06. Good rifle, accurate, smooth action and does everything I want it to.
It's the rifle I take to Africa so I want a solid and dependable rifle that can take the rigours of bouncing around in the back of a truck, hours in the bush in hot weather and also withstand the baggage handlers at the airports.
It's never let me down, been reliable and accurate and I love it.
