Media misinformation and narrative.

I was reading a news article on foxes on a golf course being controlled and reading the comments with the absolute uproar about it and everyone calling for the golf course to go out of business (which I have no doubt will happen)

I decided to put a comment on stating that although it’s sad foxes need to be controlled that people need to remember that foxes will predate dogs, cats ground nesting birds and anything else they can get their teeth into and foxes won’t do well in populations that are too dense as food availability will be an issue.

I immediately received a comment about how I was talking nonsense and that foxes “DO NOT” predate on cats and dogs.

I personally know of several cats and 2 dogs (one a pup, the other a teacup type yorkie) that were taken by foxes - the pup was taken while the owner watched from the door when the dog was let out for a pee.

So I thought I’d pull up YouTube and Google to get a video to show that they do - to my surprise the main title after the search goes on about how foxes don’t predate on cats and dogs and no vids of it, but the videos were of lefty type “professors” stating how foxes whiny kill cats!

Absolute nonsense and call cynical but I feel the narrative has been influenced by lefty idiots with a Disney complex….🙄

It’s a proper **** storm re Enfield GC started by a fluffy person living close to the GC calling police to report a bit of popping off. She was told by them all is ok as it’s people shooting foxes. That’s when the **** hit the fan.
The level of ignorance regarding foxes is astounding on the group it was initially posted on.

Thing is, all sides of any debate are guilty of it.

I heard two women who I know & volunteer with, going on about some absolute tripe other day. In a jokey way I said "where'd you hear that, GB news?" - unfortunately it turns out it indeed was on GB news!! Misinformation is cursed of easy access "news"

Another thing we can thank the interweb for!
30 years ago this A: would never have been talked about because it’s not newsworthy, B: wouldn’t have had people quoting bogus ‘reports’ and ‘stats’ which are totally made up and unverified, and C: apart from a very small group of antis, no one else would likely have given a toss.

In today’s world you say nothing to anyone about what you do unless you know them and know how they will react.
I never comment on anything to do with stalking/hunting/pest control on linked in or the like as the tsunami of trolls hitting you would be huge - how to destroy your career in one post!!!

The quieter a more understated we are about what we do the better, I feel. 99% of the population will never hear or see us doing our ‘jobs’ so the more we keep it that way the better!!

This is on the outskirts of London though, loads of people feeding them & London is a **** hole with food for foxes everywhere ( kebabs in bushes, **** waste management, fly tipping etc.). There’s no need for the foxes to predate anything.

I shoot rabbits on my local course with a 17 HMR and NV, I leave the foxes alone they do predate the rabbits

I was just about to add, normally foxes are quite welcome (apart from the poor friendly one at Culter). But they can also scratch about, maybe tarnishing their precious greens.

I often do, in order to politely correct misinformation, and have not received any backlash. In fact, I usually get a few "thank you" replies.

And then gradually we'd just fade away.
We actually need to be more open and visible, not forever hiding, in order to improve public awareness of responsible firearms ownership and the good work we do.

Is this the club on the outskirts near Crews hill? Lived over that way before moving and it’s really in that kinda area where rural stuff needs to happen but a lot of the inhabitants are city / town dwellers.

The story I’ve read seems someone at the golf club, potentially yeh owners have made worse in their damage control efforts.
Seems to have been reported that it was somehow an unauthorised cull which instantly didn’t read right to me, seems they are trying to blame the day to day management for allowing it to happen without their permission maybe?

Whilst they don’t have a season as such it’s not the best time of year to be shooting foxes in my opinion unless vitally necessary due to likelihood of orphaning cubs.

Yup that’s the club. Made very much worse by the shooters calling it in via 101 who confirmed to the fluffy caller that foxes were being shot. A shitstorm on social media followed. The GC didn’t help the situation with their response, car backfires, the committee wasn’t aware etc. The whole thing has spiralled out of control, largely fuelled by clueless fluffy types. It’s a simply ridiculous situation down here at the moment. It’s all gone silly in a silly sort of way. Makes one think twice about calling things in to the men in blue.

Just curious, how do you stand on shooting pigeons and crows in fields during the nesting season?
There isn’t any difference for me.

During the lambing season you’d lose the permission if you don’t take every fox you can.
