My good friend is covered in them now, but started out with a portrait of an Indian chief on his forearm. Beautifully done but it has always made me chuckle wondering if somewhere there is an Indian chief with a tattoo of a middle aged, redheaded, white guy on his forearm.

Don’t come to nz then, as to mental health issues, ?I just don’t particularly like them. Most of them look **** too.
Plus these days it’s mostly folk with mental health issues that get them. It’s also done now as some kind of fake show of importance or “look at me” gig. Footballers are the classic “check out my sleeve”, which 95% just look ridiculous. Then it’s “celebrities” and of course gay barbers (no offence!).
Gone are the days when it was pretty much merchant seamen and rough-arsed bikers that got them.
Apart from that, each too their own and crack if you really want one….you might consider which of the above groups you fall into before proceeding…

I feel rather sorry for the older tattooed tough guy types that earned their ink. Nowadays their 16yo neighbor likely has more ink than they do and its mostly Pokemon and other dumb sh#t.

I've looked at modern sleeves, they're one large tattoo, picture or story.
Old guys sleeves are generally multiple small ones, joined by a design of some sort.
Good pal of mine has all the ships he served on on his arms then has vines with roses on to fill in the spaces in-between.

I do like the idea of ink telling a story and progression, or a treasured memory. As mentioned before, mine has a background map of New Zealand where I was born and grew up (never quite achieved proper growing up though), an old style coil of rope and crossed ice axes for my life of winter climbing around the world, topped with the three peaks of the Dachstein mountains above their snowfields and foothills where I have ended up making my home. I designed it myself, the axes are based on an old one I own, but the compass depiction is a bit shoddy so I'm having it redone with a chain fob flowing round the back with a Hei Tiki attached to the bottom. It means a lot to me rather than just a design.

A guy I knocked around with in the 80's shaved his head and had **** the pigs tattooed on it. Those days passed, and so did his hair. He's had that tat lasered off, but he did wear a lot of hats before that.
