Mole traps

I've been using scissor traps and while I did ok with them last year I've had little luck this year. Are the tunnel traps better? Been thinking I might try them.

Yep. I swear by Duffus. Don't waste your money on the cheaper copies though? The springs are crap on them. Genuine Duffus use a decent wire for the triggers too. Makes it much easier to tune them :thumb:

Horses for courses; a well set well adjusted scissors trap can be deadly, as can the rest, putanges very effective, all the main types have their place, but certain knacks have to be learned/understood for each type to obtain best results.

A bit about scissors traps here: Mole Catching.

Les putanges:

ps Don’t be a doof-ass, the inventor’s name is Duffus, like plum duff

DUFFUS MOLE TRAP ( BARREL ) Known to many as the DUFFUS trap. It was invented in 1922 by Scottish shepherd and molecatcher, John Newton Duffus, who along with his sons, designed a mole trap that was to begin with no more than a wooden barrel with two small metal springs on the top which operated independently.

Talpex are also good when set where they work to best advantage. Horses for courses!

I have traditional scissor traps but rarely use them now. My go to are putange. I also use trapline they are stainless so even after five years use are like new. Never got on with the duffus traps but that’s just a personal thing. I occasionally say maybe twice a year get a job where they are near impossible to catch. Maybe I will try the duffus also

1oo% Talpex, only time I use a duffus is in Sandy soil, stops the ground from settling around the trap
I've found the original Talpex about the best, only enemy for it is the grass mowing wayward gardener who may require spectacles

Surprised no one mentioned fenn mole traps, they are pretty good as well, £2.00 cheaper than talpex but require a little maintenance

A guy ( grey bird) over at Marden used to supply Talpex original at a very very good price if you buy a 100 at a time
I think he imports direct

These are the ones I've been using

The place I got them from call them Pro scissor mole traps, on the flatpack site they look the same as the talpex ones. Just watched the video about the putanges and ordered some of them and the setting tool rather than the duffus ones. I think the way they go in the tunnel will make them easier for me to set well over the ones I've got at the moment. Whatever the reason why my current ones aren't working I think a change is a good idea.

Cheers for the advice all. As usual the SD is a goldmine of useful information.

my mate uses putangs, he secures the trigger with pike trace and uses a pin to lock the two traps in place. he has very good results but i think he knows where to set the traps and can read the mole hills well

Those are the kiddies! Set them fine in a straight run and make sure the hole isn’t much wider than the trap. Also make sure no stones can interrupt the closing trap and that the walls of the trap don’t get hit by the top opening!! I could go on but that’s going to cost you. 🤣
