Muntjac barking call?

I have used a Buttolo for muntjac and roe with some success. But I have always wondered why there is no version of a barking muntjac buck call. Unless I have missed something?

In the evening as bucks start to mark out territory with a bark, I have always wanted to stalk into one barking, set up the rifle and then bring him out with a decent enough bark from a rival. Is there anything out there that works to mimic the muntjac bark?

Just set up and wait as they can be quite good for time, I am getting them come past a camera with in an hour early mornings as for trying to mimic the voice of a muntjac well they will all be a tad different I feel you would only serve to show you were in that spot.

Asked Bestfoxcall suppliers of Reece Outdoors calls about such a thing some years ago. Didn't get a reply. Tried the deepest raspiest call they do (Ghost Runner). It sort of did a sort of bark but not so as I would be confident using it.
This might be worth a try though BFC Fallow Call – Best Fox Call with short sharp blows.

If someone came up with a convincing muntjac bark call I am sure there would be a lot of buyers.

Shame the septics don't have muntjac. There would be a call out there now.

Interesting. I’ve always considered a barking muntjac as a bad thing, generally if it’s seen you or winded you. I have no knowledge of using a barn to establish territory so interested to see what other’s thoughts or experiences are. Personally I’ve called munties with buttolo and cherrywood but not Nordic roe. Had a CWD come into Nordic roe couple of weeks ago

I’ve got muntjac bark on my fox caller,it did work once,a munty started calling one night while out foxing so i replied to it and it came straight to caller, obviously not shot at night,it was far to cold to get out an deal with that 😁

Sitting in a fox box now and there are a couple of muntjac barking 2 fields away in a copse. At least 800yds from where I am. They have been at it a good half hour now. Doubt they have winded me. So can only assume they are gobbling off at/to each other.

If I knew how to record and post it I would have a go at doing do.

Gobbling off???
Are you sure thats what you meant????

🤣🤣🤣

Er!! No. That's a combination of twilight and predictive text for you.

Whether the gobbing leads to gobbling I can only surmise.

It's gone quite so they have either departed or are now engaging in other oral pursuits

I might just try a live recording of a bark on my iPhone. My idea is to wait until evening, get some bucks barking and go for them slowly waiting just a little bit back setting up the sticks gun ready. Pull one forward for a shot to keep the intruder out or at least see how big he is. Only the intruder has a .308! It just seems such an obvious thing to try. The beauty is you know you have a beast there. I have successful peeped in auntie does on a Buttolo with the light squeak. But a mouth generated call would be brilliant. One for figuring out.

I think if it was going to work everyone would be doing it already. My understanding is that the muntjac bark is an alarm call, so imitating it will simple warn them to be on high alert to danger in the area, thus making the stalker's job harder.

Muntjac bark for many reasons, alarm bark is usually a series of barks in rapid succession mostly as they make haste away from you! Territorial bark is more evenly spaced and can get louder and quieter as they tend to circle, I've seen a stand off with two mature bucks which started off as basically a barking match before they fought, also hear them sometimes barking at each other at distance, quite amusing to watch as they flick their head up with each bark and then almost seem surprised a noise came out!! Sometimes they die 🙄

The ring tone for several years on my mobile phone was a muntjac barking, recorded in one of the woods where I stalk.

I figured if I was going to get phone calls when out stalking then the least disturbance would be caused by a natural sound.

Several times I had it ring when muntjac were nearby, and they didn't really seem to pay it any attention.

I changed the tone earlier this year to using a wren's call instead, recorded from one I encountered on the track where I walk our dogs most mornings. It works exceptionally well at bringing wrens in, particularly in the late spring/early summer when the males are setting up their territories and building nests.

I have experienced both types of barking: alarm and territorial defending. The bark is not dissimilar, but the frequency and urgency is there when it is for an alarm. Last night I had one go into alarm mode when it scented me downwind. Then it ****ed off. When territorial they are holding a position and warning other muntjac to steer clear. It is this latter situation I wish to exploit. It just seems like another adventure to give it a try.

Just take a strong willed terrier about an hour before sunset...

Take the thing for a wee and it runs off for an hour thinking its got "mates" in the woods 😂

I have had mixed results with a buttolo on munties.
Sometimes I have squeaked one that is barking and they simply bugger off.
The last time I did it I had one responding to me quite well, I called in a roe buck and also got a small doe to come in, but it’s a mixed bag tbh!!
