Whilst not as attractive as roe, I have to confess to a growing admiration for muntjac. They have adapted perfectly to the UK environment.
Whilst we have what is largely a shoot on sight policy, nonetheless I enjoy watching and studying muntjac. Fortunately I have plenty of opportunity to do that round here, hence the photos. I watched one this morning mooching through a reed bed, perhaps a closer ecosystem to its native one. Other than when bedded down they seem to be constantly on the move.
A friend of ours had a very expensive vet bill for their springer spaniel after an altercation with a muntjac buck, and I've impaled myelf on their tusks when carrying them to the car. Certainly not to be messed with.
What's more, I still reckon muntjac venison to be the best. I supplied a sample fillet to a customer who has always bought roe venison in the past, and they emailed me to say how exquisite it was. Another convert.
