Muntjacstalker ...and fallow

Last year I booked a couple of stalks with Jason at Muntjacstalker so headed over last Thursday. Met up with Jason and headed out to see if we could find a nice buck.

We saw plenty of muntjac (which we dont have in Mid Wales) and for me its great to see them regardless of being able to have a shot or not. We saw a couple of bucks but they headed into cover so we stalked on. Jason spotted a nice buck and pointed him out to me...I could only see the top of his head as he was in thick cover but he was a nice buck...heart rate started to rise as I waited for a clear shot off the sticks (he was only 35 yards away so had to be very slow and steady with any movements). He cleared the cover and met with a 140 grain 6.5 Creedmoor bullet in the chest...and not surprisingly ..dropped on the spot. 1739801821834.webp

After a quick gralloch we headed onto another patch for a cull animal so I managed another long range shot at 40 yards on a young buck who again dropped on the spot.

Next morning we headed out after another cull animal. The wind was wrong for the wood Jason wanted to stalk so we changed our plans. Loads of deer in the first wood but cover etc precluded a shot. We got to the end of the wood and another cull buck presented. Quick whistle and he stopped about 30 yards away- shot away and he ran on....I thought the shot was good but as he slowed I put a second shot through his shoulder and chest to make sure. On inspection a big chunk of lung was hanging through the first hole so he wouldnt have gone far...better safe then sorry.

Jason was spot on...down to earth and had a good sense of humor...I ll definitely be heading back.

Came home and headed out to a localish patch I shoot after fallow.

I waited for a group to follow their usual routine and head into the wood I was waiting in but after a hour I changed my plans and headed out to a second wood to see the group heading back to the wood I was just in....typical. A 600 meter jog got me back into position and I managed to get up into the high seat.

The main group headed across the wood and I was hoping they would come out about 80 yards away. I looked through the thermal and there was one heading the wrong way just on the edge of the field. Looked through the rangefinder and he was 305 yards away. Now I know I will get some abuse for this...but 1) My rifle shoots 1/4 moa 2)I have shot it at 300 yards and know its spot on 3) I had a really steady position 4) No way to get closer 5) I have a 5-30 zoom so could see exactly where I was aiming.

Shot away and he took 2 steps and dropped on the spot.

Waited 30 mins for the main group to come out but they were in thick cover. Headed over and shot a doe off the sticks at about 60 yards.

Good few days of stalking. 👍

Its a custom ...made by Mike Norris at Brock and Norris. Origin action. MDT Timbr stock...and other fancy bits I cant remember :) 👍 ...with a Swarovski Z6I scope.

Most of the deer I shoot are down in Devon as my mate who got me into deer stalking lives down there ...though Muntjac are a rarity down there as well.
