I’m looking for a light, short, durable and quiet ( in that order) muzzle mounted moderator for a 30-30 lever action ( ok I know, I know, blasphemy heretic etc etc :cuckoo:):D I”ve found dpt, Wildcat elite compact ti and freyr devik uts 3d 131, any more out there to consider? any hands on, real world experiences you can share, particularly regarding sound attenuation and durability as it will get a fair number of rounds through it. Many thanks RF

Sound reduction requires very specialist equipment. everything is subjective unless you look at one of the published tests like this Reviews and Tests – Edinburgh Rifles
With moderators, its a series of massive compromises, the main one being light and durable or heavy and long lasting. Drying the moderator out after use reduces the risk from water damage.

I have heavy steel JetZs that are still going from the 1990s after thousands of shots. But then again the larger F&D, that is light and is probably mid way through its life after about 4 years and 400 shots.

depends what you mean by 'fair number of rounds' ?

I have F&D FW149 (149g) on my .243, a F&D UTS131 (131g) on my .270 and an Oceania Defence Alpine Hunter (167g) and F&D UTS231 (231g) on my two .308s.

Other lightweights I'd be interested in trying include the Svemko Pure S (198g) or the Nano 1.0 (185g).

Thank you, Agreed. I haven't ruled out 2 mods at this point. I don't want to compromise the handling when stalking so short and light is priority for that. If I can get reasonable durability in the same mod for practice and plinking then happy days if not I'll get another one that will take the punishment. The plinking ammo will be loaded on the light side anyway and much of it will be subsonic too so I'm hopeful it'll be fine.

I use the lightweights for stalking and slap on Wilcats for zeroing, range use, etc then adjust back to the stalking mods.

How does the uts131 manage with the 270? how many rounds through it so far? I'll have a look at the svemko offerings. Thank you

Very well! No issues so far bar being a fairly lightweight .270 it does suffer from some muzzle flip, but performance-wise, I rate it :thumb:I've only been using this Tikka T3X/UTS131 combo for about 6 months now but reckon I'm North of 200 rounds but its taken a lot of animals so far and 6 fallow last weekend 🤗

I use the Wildcat elite compact Ti on my own rifle. Just under 300g with the thread insert and the quality is second to none. Its the most concentric moderator i’ve had or fitted with less than 0.003” runout on the exit hole(the last Jetz i fitted had 0.010” by comparison). Materials and coatings are the highest quality. If you’re local or in the area you’re welcome to come and look. And yes, I can sell you one!

I have a Freyr and devik uts 231. Very happy with it.

Coming from years of moderators that are twice the weight I do enjoy having it lighter. It’s half the weight and just as quiet as my previous stalon. Heats up quickly but cools quickly so it’s certainly a hunting mod.
