N540 in 270?

Afternoon all,

I am about to use the last of my win 760 which I have used with Hornady 270 130gr GMX and more recently CX, which performs well. I can get my hands on some N540 for a very good price, which is in the burn rate range for that bullet although no published loads exist (its often listed right next to win 760). Using copper bullets, I pay attention to the velocity.

The Viht site says -

" Vihtavuori N540 is a universal rifle powder for wide variety of medium-sized calibers suitable for both hunting and target shooting. It is an excellent choice for cartridges running from .223/5.56 mm to .308 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield with heavier bullet weights.

Vihtavuori N540 delivers outstanding accuracy with exceptionally clean burning. Due to the extra energy content that all of our N500 series powders include, a velocity up to 30-40 m/s higher can be achieved with the same pressure level compared to the equal in the N100 Vihtavuori series. It is certainly worth trying when using heavier bullets and when higher loading densities and muzzle velocities are needed!"

I know that there is more to comparing different powders than burn rates. So is it worth trying to work up a load in that before I begin the epic Lord of the Rings esque journey around the houses to find some more 760 or 4831?

Your thoughts?

As you say, N540 seems to be a similar burn rate to H414/Win760, and I'm sure it could work.

I'd be looking for something slightly slower burning like N160 or Ramshot Hunter that will fill the case more. These work well for me with 270's.

I'd say it was too fast for 130gr in a .270.
In my view Viht x40's would count as quite slow for .223, and at the quicker end for standard .30cals with medium-heavy bullets. But not a thing for 130gr .270.

Don’t know about burn rates but I’ve loaded up for 130’s using N160/N165/N560…all with very acceptable results. N560 with N165 a very close 2nd. Barrel length will probably determine which one will work best for you.
I’d say N540 will be your least favourable option if added into the mix.

I'm sure, if it's being suggested by a reputable source, that it would work - but optimally?

Viht themselves seem to suggest nothing slower than N160 for 130gr bullets, dropping to Nx50 for 115gr and lighter.

I usually say that it is not possible to bring a modern bolt action rifle to explode if one uses the appropriate powder.
With N540 in a .270 Win. I‘m not so sure …

Nx40 is perfect for a .308. The .270 is an overbore cartridge and needs considerably slower burning powder as already suggested by others.
