New Jacket Recommendations

My old heavy duty Deerhunter jacket now absorbs water and leaks and weighs a ton at the end of a wet day so is being binned.

Looking for a new waterproof, medium weight jacket, non camo for beating, shooting and pottering. Not bothered about make, but reasonably priced and dont want a smock.

Only requirements are hand warmer pockets and internal zip pockets for phone, keys etc. TIA

I wear a RAB Valiance Down jacket in Green, I wear it for foxing, stalking and beating, not the cheapest but very warm and waterproof, I paid a lot less than this but I bought it in the summer when they were on sale, doesn't really help you at the minute but might be worth watching out for in the summer if they come on special.

Deerhunter Pro Gamekeeper Jacket Turf - I have the smock version, good quality sensibly priced jacket and fits well as I find all deerhunter kit does!
If I didn't have another 3 jackets on the go I would probably add it to my shooting kit

Give it another chance, it's wetting out because it's either been washed using detergent, the DWR has given up or the pores in the membrane have become blocked, most likely the 1st or 2nd option.
Try giving it a wash using soap flakes, then another cycle with nothing in other than water, then reproof with Nikwax Wash in or Diver Dave's stuff.

I would recommend the Deerhunter Ram Jacket I've got for sale in the classifieds 🥴I'll get my coat:coat::coat:

In my humble opinion which doesn't count for a lot, I think the best best all round general shooting coat has to be a Musto Highland. A high collar, hand warmer pockets, poachers pockets, pop stud cartridge pockets, drop down liner, adjustable cuffs etc. I've got one that must be knocking on for 30 years old and still going. I've bought several secondhand for peanuts that get washed and treated with Diver Daves Repel liquid (ebay) that are better than anything else I've tried (admittedly, I haven't tried Kuiu, Sitka etc).

I got a Sherwood jacket about 10 years ago and it was as you describe after a wet day. I washed it with a wash/waterproofer and it’s good as new again. It’s seen plenty of use over the years and it’s plenty good enough for beating.
On days that I shoot I have an Alan Payne tweed that’s a good bit of kit for the money

The new Highland jackets aren’t like that sadly. I have one of the original Whisper jackets that is about 26 years old and still wearable. Sadly Musto seem to be moving away from shooting clothes.
