I have an Fallkniven F1 that my girlfriend got for me. It has done 5 deer without being sharpened and I'm really impressed with it and it has quickly become an essential bit of kit. The Mora/Frosts clippers are also hard to beat and inexpensive and I always carry one as a backup and would have no hesitation in recommending one, especially if you are prone to leaving things behind or on a budget.

And there you have the correct answer. I carry the Fallkniven as my primary knife on my belt and a Mora (or 2) in the Roe Sack for backup. The F1 blade is a bit deep for doing the back passage on a smaller deer, use the Mora for that all the time.

If you want to invest a bit of money in a blade the choice is almost limitless. Some good suggestions have been made so far.

If you want to spend the least amount of money possible to get a knife that will do everything you need, the Clipper is the one to go for.

The steel is excellent - it holds an edge well but is also easy to sharpen. They are also as tough as old boots - I went on a bushcraft course last weekend. The organisers issued Clippers to everyone. We all used the Clippers to split logs. This involved whacking the back of the blade with another log. As the blade progresses down through the log we were whacking just the tip of the blade sticking out on the far side.

A knife that can take that sort of abuse is more than up to gralloching.

If you have the money, why not go for a custom blade? You have a great selection of talented knife makers in the uk.

I use a custom damasteel fixed blade and carry a buck 110 folder as a backup. The 110 is a great knife, if you like folders.

Have a look at getting one good knife and a couple of budgets ones - clipper are good as the latter and you can pick them up for about £10 on sale. EKA are great knifes swing blade has been mentioned but also the butchers set and the folding knifes!

Unless its urgent that you need one now! I would tend to wait and see what you can pick up at the game fairs coming up soon. You will find some fantastic custom knifes at affordable prices! Plus the knife stalls can often offer some great savings and you won't pay the postage!!

For me you can't beat the Gerber Gator. It holds an edge really well, the handle fits well in your hand and is none slip due to the textured rubber, even when your hand is covered in blood. I also have 2 Folding Buck knives but it's the Gator I use most.

Would have said buck until recently but I have been really impressed with the Helle Eggen. Laminated blade that did heads and legs on 9 reds and would still shave my arm at the end. Also a scandi grind so a doddle to sharpen back to razor sharp. Not as cheap as a Mora but still reasonable at around £60

I've used this company a few times for Marttiini knives and the Gerber sharpeners Very cheap and delivered within a week. Order only one knife a a time because of the import tax.
