new rifle aquisition

I am currently shooting a .243 win and a .30-06. I shoot 100gr bullets from the 243 and 150s from the .06. I am considering changing both to buy a 7mm 08 remmington. good velocity from a bullet with high sectional density at 140 grains or so. with good bc.

Has anyone got one and what do you think of it?

Can't help re:7mm 08 but i am after a nice .30-06 so if you are selling perhaps you might be intrested to know that!

it is a parker hale 1200, in great condition. It's not light, it's not synthetic, it's not fashionable but it's a bloody good rifle! I am just toying with the idea at the minute.

I swapped from a Brno .243 to a tikka 7mm08 the other year, I would not go back, the 7mm08 is so flat shooting with less recoil.

I shot three deer recently 2 at 180 yds and one at 150 yds, all one shot (each) and down like a sack of spuds. no real meat damage (who eats the ribs?)

if you zero for 200 yds it will be an inch high at 100yds and 2 inch low at 300yds.

Bob I would check your data again mate don't mean to de-cry your 7-08 but it is not capable of that performance Irrespective of what bullet weight and how much powder you cram in it. May be it is a typo on your part, don’t get me wrong I like 7mm rifles but it’s not that flat shooting.

My favorites have dissapeared last week so I cannot find the article I took that from,

but personal experience would seem to stand up.

The 7mm08 is far flatter shooting than my old 243 or my mates 308 for instance.

I have had a look on the federal website.
of course it all depends on the bullet wieght that you are shooting. It seems that a .30-06 with 150 gr shoots very similar to a 243 with a 100 gr and that is very similar to a 7mm08 with 140 gr. all are pretty flat compared with some cartridges. up to 200 m not much much 3.6 inch. I would zero an inch high at 100 to get 2 inches bellow poa at 200 and just aim very slightly high or just dead on the same and the bullet will do the biz for me. the sectional density is higher. Not that penetration has ever been an issue at all with the .06

In my world of relative reality i don't shoot over 200m so i am happy enough with them figures.

I had a gold medal in the sights at 300 yds the other week, if he had turned other than bum on, he would have been shot.

normally as you say 200 yds max is the norm, but sometimes?

I don't rate my range judging well enough when at 300 we are looking at a foot of drop. I wiould keep within my boundaries

Them figures look more like it Bob, Personally I use that "king of flat shooting non-magnum cartridges" the .270 win. With a 200yrd zero the bullet is never 1 ½” above or below your point of aim between 50 and 250 yrds, so if it is in range I just aim for a heart shot and do not worry about it.

That .270 is a classic round for a reason. The 25-06 is also pretty flat and fast. the 130 gr 270 must have shot so many deer over the years. It would be great to know the proportions of what has been shot by what calibre. I bet the winner would be the BOW AND ARROW!

Your 30-06 must be up there, and the old .303 must of flattened a lot of game in the old empire over the past 100yrs

243 87gn bullet drop at 300yrds ...........................8.1"
243 100gn bullet drop at 300yrds..........................8.9"

7-08 100gn bullet drop at 300yrds.........................8.1"
7-08 140gn bullet drop at 300yrds.........................8.8"

All figures are based on max' handloads.

Flatter shooting? the amount would be purely academic at stalking ranges.
Both use the same necked down .308 case if you use a heavier bullet there will be more recoil so unless you are running it on 100gns your recoil wil be more.

If it feels less then it will be down to a better designed/fitting stock or because it is a heavier rifle.

Don't get me wrong Bob I think the 7-08 is a good calibre but it can't hit harder and kick less everthing else being equal.

My mate still has a .303 as a stalking rifle it is a Rigby based on a military action but is stocked in fine walnut and the action is engraved, it has a cape rib running down the top of the barrel, it used to be his father’s a officer in the army when he was stationed in Africa. I have shot it using 150gn factory ammo and it felt most pleasant to shoot and considering it was a open sights only it shot very well.

Recoil is a subjective issue.

I agree that the 7mm08 does carry a bit more clout.

I prefer the .308.
