New to stalking from Suffolk/Cambs border

Hi all, I have been lurking and using the forum for its wealth of useful information regarding to FAC application and general tips and tricks for all things relating to deer stalking, and so far have found this to be an excellent repository, especially to someone who is new to this!

I'm based on the border of 3 counties, being Suffolk, Cambridgeshire & Essex, so I'm really quite fortunate in that I'm reasonably likely to see at least 5 of the 6 species without having to travel too far for them.

My experience with rifles is largely recent, outside of playing with break barrel air rifles and BB guns as a teenager. I purchased a .177 Gamo GX 250 earlier this year which is great, fantastically accurate PCP air rifle. Recently also did a range session and had a go with a few calibres, .22 rimfire, .223, and .308. Really enjoyed the experience.

I've been incredibly lucky to have a friend who is already a well established stalker with years of experience, who has been kind enough to coach me and let me use his .243 rifle, and we've been out a handful of times this year successfully stalking Roe (and regularly seeing CWD & Muntjac). I performed my first gralloch with guidance a couple of weeks ago, and also had the fun task of boiling the head for a trophy, there's a smell that won't leave me for some time!

Currently working on obtaining my FAC, with a view to obtaining my own permissions. GP pro-forma went off this week, so hoping I won't have to wait too long for that bit. As far as I have been able to glean, Suffolk police aren't too terrible where it comes to processing FAC's, and again I count my luck knowing that I'm not having to get my application processed by Cambridgeshire, who don't seem to have the best reputation when it comes to application processing!!

I would appreciate (tentatively, I'm sure it's a deep area of vigorous discussion) some input where it concerns the calibre I should put on my application. This is in part due to the impending ban on lead ammunition in the not so distant future. I'm quite keen to avoid investing in say a .243 if lead ammo is on the way out, and instead I am considering .308 / 6.5 creedmoor.

Appreciate any advice given, and look forward to chatting and general discourse!

Welcome!
No shortage of deer in your neck of the woods, that's for sure!
(I spend a fair bit of time over that way myself).

Welcome from Mid Wales.

Calibre wise...thats very subjective ... you will find. 6.5mm takes some beating (maybe go 6.5 x 55 so you get less abuse then if you get a creed (I have one and love it)....308 30-06 .270 etc...see if you can get a chance to try a few different calibres and rifles before you make your choice and good luck 👍

Cheers, appreciate the welcome! There certainly is plenty of deer round my area, I often see Muntjac & Fallow near home, unfortunately it seems more frequently spotted as roadkill!

Indeed I had the feeling calibre choice might be a contentious subject, but I'm open to any advice I can get. I'd been told .270 is a perhaps a bit too wicked of a round for some of the smaller species I'm likely to see. Overall I'm just trying to reduce the chance of being denied an FAC based on calibre choices! I do appreciate the suggestion of trying them out before purchasing, makes perfect sense, I'll have to see if that's a possibility nearby, I do remember the chap at the range gun shop mentioning something similar.

To my mind in the area you are in , and the variety of species, it would be difficult to argue that there is any real difference between deer legal calibres. I think you are wise to steer clear of .243 given the copper side of things (I have one and love it). A lot of the larger calibres are a bit punchy for small deer but thats where bullet placement comes into it. Personally I would say 6.5 and either go swede (6.5x55) or Creed 👍 If in doubt buy a cheaper secondhand rifle and then if you decide you want something different its not painful to part with a new rifle thats lost a shed load of value.

You can try my .270 next time I'm passing, if you like.

Absolutely, that would definitely be an offer too good to pass up, much appreciated!
Presumably you're within striking distance of the A14?
Just got back from a trip over to Essex and Suffolk yesterday evening.
Will be there again in a few weeks.
Drop me a PM if you want to sort something out.

Good on Tim (VSS)...just be aware that you will need hearing protection as Tims .270 is unmoderated.

Im near Newmarket in Nov so if you are still wondering then let me know and you can try the Creed out. It will be like yellowpages vs the internet 😅

Another very appreciated offer, thank you! Definitely let me know closer to the time, as I'd be a fool to turn down any experience I can get!

I ll ty and remember mate but feel free to PM me with your details and we can see what we can arrange when I know exactly whats happening with dates, times and weather etc 👍

He will either love it and be hooked for life, or hate it and end up buying a Creedmoor 🤣
😅 Either way he will end up with a decent deer killing calibre and can continue to enjoy the fun that these debates bring....my rifles better then yours 😛

I’ll be the first to chuck in the good old 308W 👍

Whilst the majority of the deer I shot last winter were with my 6.5 (a 6.5x47Lapua as there no way I have enough hair to have a man bun), I’ve used a 308W since the day I first shot a deer. It’s shot everything from Magpies & rabbits up to Moose - granted I wasn’t able to eat the rabbits but with the correct bullet selection & placement carcass damage is not an issue.

Try as many different types/makes/models of rifle as you can - having one that is right for you is far more important than choosing the cartridge it fires!!
