I think your best bet would be to get some paid stalking booked and use that as a good reason to get your FAC. Once you've got your FAC granted its a lot easier to then seek out ground or syndicates to join.
From the land owners point of view turning up and saying "do you want your deer shot?", they say "yes, when can you start?" and you say "In 3 months once I've got my licence, bought a rifle and been to the range a few times to get comfortable with it" is a bit of a non starter!
Plus by doing the paid stalks you build up a network of fellow stalkers, make friends and one of them might be kind enough to bring you on board in a syndicate or something.

As Stu says, with respect to getting your FAC, paid stalks should do fine. Joining a club/range is also something worth considering.
