New Zealand Holiday

I recently read this thread:
and it reminded me of the breadth of knowledge in this site. I hope to tap into it here.
My older daughter is currently working on a dairy farm close to a small town called Te Kuiti for the second half of a year between school and uni (she worked the first half on Invermark Estate as a pony ghillie. What a year!). We plan to visit her for almost three weeks in our summer holidays and what I would like is inside knowledge about the area.
NZ is bigger than most folks think so we’re sticking with the North Island and we’re even missing chunks of that. We want to generally stay for more than one day in each location so that we can see some of the countryside, maybe doing some day walks into wilder country.
We plan to stay in the following locations: Otorohanga (close to the farm and Haddads outdoor clothing shop), Raglan for surfing, New Plymouth, maybe a night in Whanganui, Tongariro, Rotarua and Coromandel (Whitianga).
My questions are: is there anything on the list that is worth missing, and are we missing anything special?
Thanks in advance.

Most of those places you listed are toilets, you are visiting the Colon of a beautiful country.

Head up from Tekuiti to Tongariro then Taupo, swing east to Napier or if your brave Taupo ,Gisborne,Hastings Napier and into Poverty bay.

I grew up in NZ,hunted all over it.

Get yourself to Waimarama for a quality NZ beachfront experience. Fish and chips at the local shop is second to none and it’s a true Kiwi experience.

Winery tours near Napier are well worth doing, Craggy Range and Black Barn winery are great lunch venues.

Get yourself to Hastings and have a browse in Rivers to Range, the proprietor Jeremy Hanaray also has a hunting outfitter business.

Taupo is well worth a visit too, scenic area, plenty to do and Hamills of Taupo is a great hunting and fishing shop.

The North Island has some great spots, you’ll have a great time 👍🏻

I was there in 2008 so lots of changes and development in places I imagine.
Bay of islands is beautiful, right up north to cape Reinga where the pacific and Tasmania sea meet, mangonui for great fish and chips.
Hot springs beach coromandel, take a spade dig a pool and poach yourself. And many other great places as mentioned in other posts

Is it worth missing out New Plymouth for the Napier area? Because of the distances it will be one or the other for us.

Which part is particularly colonic? New Plymouth and Raglan?

Phew that's a hard one.

NP is a backwater of no significant scenic appeal, you don't just pass through it,similar to Hull you have to be going there.

Raglan is a town of meth smoking locals and yuppie second homers.

You have three weeks,I suggest if you flying into AKL. Three days to get over the jetlag, then over to the Coromandel, cut back to Taupo, over to the east coast and down that side, cut over to Te Kuiti then fly Wellington to Christchurch. Hire a car,up the coast to kaikoura ,Malborough sounds, over to the west coast and back to Christchurch via Arthur's pass.

Don't leave anything in the car over night, don't leave the car full of belongings unattended when on the east coast of the North Island

Crime is rife back home,it's like a rural Brixton or as a mate described it "Like a giant native reservation ".

Napier is nice in that you can drive the Napier-Taupo highway which is quite scenic.

You could drive Taupo -Gisborne via waikeremoana, that's a gorgeous drive. Just don't stop for long in Murupara.

Just been to the Coramandal, 3 days lovely area, that includes driving from northland, Hastings is a tip, Napier is nice, that time of year is winter so expect rain, as to crime, if in a camper try to avoid freedom camping and leaving valuables, remember NZ is very chilled out , no one cares what you wear, northland is the P capital of NZ but you will not encounter it if you avoid town’s beginning with a K 😅 the bay of islands is spectacular also the hokihanga.
