I've made a list of the equipment I think i need for my foray into reloading but I had a few questions I couldn't see the answers to.
I'll be reloading for .243, I'm having some success with the factory federal premium with sierra heads but would like to tighten up the groups as i'd like to learn more about shooting longer range.
I'm trying to keep costs to a minimum at the moment so will be buying mainly second hand I think.
My list is as below;
Equipment;
- Reloading manual(s)
- Tumbler and media
- Reloading Press - What are the bushes for and do they come with the press or the dies?
- Dies - I dont know which dies I need, also can I use any brand dies with any press?
- Trimming tool
- reamer for neck
- Powder scoop
- Powder trickler
- Funnel (home made?)
- Scales (was going to go electronic but not sure if balance scales are more desirable for any reason?)
Consumables;
- Heads (Sierra gameking 85gr BTHP)
- Primers - any recommendations?
- Powder- any recommendations? I'm getting 3050fps from a 20" barrel with the federals and want to stay deer legal
- Brass (I have once fired federal & hornady brass + nickel plated Federal brass) should I just be using one type?
I haven't reloaded at all before so will be doing plenty more reading and watching videos on youtube etc. (maybe a course or someone to watch first too!) I'd just like to start slowly building my kit up in preparation.
I'm based in Dorset.
First thing: They're not "heads", they're bullets or projectiles. "Heads" is a term used by those who can't be bothered with accurate terminology.
Any reloading manuals less than 10 years old will do just fine - Ebay. IMO any Lyman from the 46th edition on is excellent, as they explain the reloading process much better than the rest.
Press: Get an O rather than a C type (frame shape). Lee will do but Lyman or RCBS are definitely more rubust.
Dies: Lee three die set with sizing, seating & factory crimp will do the job for minimal cost. All dies have the same thread.
Sizing lube: Imperial Sizing Wax or the RCBS liquid.
Scales: Cheap electronic are shite, get a balance beam, preferably RCBS, Lyman or Redding but lee will do.
Get a set of check weights to ensure the scales are accurate.
Primer seater: Press mounted is slower but cheaper. If you want hand held, then Lee is cheapest but requires a dedicated shell holder (I prefer the far more robust RCBS, which uses the same shell holder as the press).
You don't need a powder dispenser to start with, especially as Lee dies come with a little powder scoop. Just scoop an under weight amount onto the scale, then tap a little more in until it's at the desired weight.
For accuracy, buy a powder trickler (I like the RCBS).
The Lee case trimmer is cheap & more than sufficient for small numbers of cases.
You don't need a neck reamer but you do need a case mouth chamfer tool (RCBS way better than Lee).
Powder funnel has to be the real thing, as it sits OUTSIDE but over the case mouth to prevent spills - they're cheap.
You don't need a tumbler unless you want shiny brass. A primer pocket cleaning tool & a suitable size bronze brush for the case mouth is enough to start with.
GameKings are good bullets
I use standard CCI primers, as they're consistent & rarely unavailable (always have some on stock though...)
Powder is where things get a tad complicated, as many of those listed in the reloading manuals are no longer available in the UK (thanks to the EU...)
Have a look at Vihtavuori or Reloder.
