Nexgard Spectra seems to be the new all-singing treatment for fleas, ticks & a host of parasites, prescription only, our vets want £59.98 for 3 x medium doses, online it's £20.99 + postage for the same, I supposed the difference in cost is for the prescription? Anyway around the hurdle? I'll ring our vets up tomorrow and see what the crack is, but doubt I'll have any joy getting a prescription only off them so I could buy online.

My dogs been on Bravecto, Milbemax, Nexgard, Drontal and Sempico (maybe spelt differently) all do the same thing, which isn’t quite everything. IE they’ll do all the worms but not fleas/ticks or they’ll do all the fleas and ticks and all the worms besides heart and lungworm. Either way for your dog to be protected it’ll need to be on a combination.
Having just moved across the country we’ve moved vets and now the dogs on Drontal and Sepico (or what ever it’s called) £115 for 6 months.

My vet used to charge me £15 for a prescription so that i could by tablets for my russell at the high street chemist this was a repeat 3 use one

I get a script from the vet and buy online. Usually £15 for the script.

my ex vet wanted £85 consultation fee plus £25 for a prescription plus the cost of the flea treatment i told him to go and do one cheeky git they dont give a toss about your animals no more there just a money making business gone are the days when they cared bs

Let’s be honest. Average salary for a vet in the uk is about mid 40’s,(hardly staggering compared to a doctor or dentist). Possibly the fact that there is a lot of corporate ownership and more jobs higher up the chain now which drives the costs up but it’s generally not the person in the clinic that’s getting the cash.

Average salary for a vet in the uk is about mid 40’s

I looked up an ave wage in Victoria and its about $110,000 per annum. More @ 15 grand gbp`s but not much more which surprised me.

Yep I think having free healthcare/NHS in the uk has also skewed the perception of the costs of medical treatment here. In other countries like the states, the vet salaries are much higher.

Shouldn't be any issues getting a written prescription for it. Just be aware that as the legislation stands in order to prescribe we legally have to have seen and checked the animal, so that it is deemed "under our care" and as such we are responsible.

£17.50 for a prescription for 6 months ( 6 tablets ) so I get a 12 month month prescription for £35.00 and then buy them ( Nexgard Spectra ) online.

Mates wife works for the manufactures ( B I ) and reckons the online boys are buying in massive quantities and selling for virtually no profit !

Part of the issue we as vets have is that we are essentially tied to buying through wholesalers who obviously add their markup as well.
Manufacturer-----Wholesaler-----Dirty Profiteering Thief(Vet)-----end user/client
Manufacturer-----Online Pharmacy------end user/client
In most cases the price vets pay for medications (before VAT) from the wholesaler is higher than the price the online pharmacies charge WITH the VAT to clients.
And annoyingly, the online pharmacy guys do not have wholesale licenses so are unable to supply wholesale to vets!
